Homily Points

19th Sunday B

General. Yet a third Sunday, other than the Feast of Corpus Christi, and the Church is again reminding us of the bread of life given unto the forgiveness of sins and the cup of wine for the redemption of the world. As the Father feeds His earthly children, we have all due cause to be fully encouraged and to call Him ‘Abba – Father’, all of us being His adoptive children.

First Book of Kings. The Angel of the Lord awakens Eliah twice in the midst of the hot desert where he is tarrying, to give him food and drink. These provisions strengthen Eliah to continue on his journey towards Horeb, the mountain of the Lord. The same thing happens to us in our tarrying in this forsaken land on our way towards life everlasting.

Ephesians. St Paul reminds us of our human condition on earth and encourages us to forgive one another the same way God has forgiven us in Christ. We would only be able to achieve such a state of forgiveness if we resemble God in this as His beloved children.

St John. The Jews could not understand how Jesus had the power to say that he was descending from heaven when his relatives were known to one and all. Yet Jesus does not get involved in any of these arguments but clearly states that only whosoever believes in him shall have life everlasting. He is the bread of life and gives up his body so that all humanity might have life.
