Homily Points

18th Sunday B

General. Jesus willed that his listeners might understand that he was the living bread coming down from heaven. It is usual for humans to grumble about anything adverse which might happen to them in their lives, little if at all having any sense of thankfulness for what God has provided or permitted to happen. In accepting, however, Jesus as living in the Eucharist, they would also be recognising Him as creator and leader of their lives.

Ezechiel. The Jews had easily forgotten all the good things which the Lord had done with them when taking him out of the Pharoah’s clutches with a raised and mighty arm. God sends them manna and Moses reminds them that in His great mercy for them, and in spite of all, God had still fed them out of His bounty and goodness.

Ephesians. When a person is baptised, he would be divesting himself of his old self and taking on a new character or personality. In such manner baptised persons will no longer behave themselves like pagans, with all their perverse ways of thinking and doings, but instead they will start treading the path of God’s justice and holiness.

St John. After Jesus had given the crowd wheaten bread to eat, he told them that they should henceforth labour for food which would strengthen them in their pursuit of life everlasting. What was most important was that they believe in him as having been sent to them by the Father. In accepting and believing in God’s Word as bread of life, no person could ever again be thirsty for any other worldly substance.
