Homily Points

17th Sunday B

General. As from the beginning of time God has always wanted to give us of His essence as food and drink. In sending His Son on earth, He who is His Word, He also wanted to feed us with earthly bread so that we might understand such great mercy as He wanted to spread on us all.

Second Book of Kings. The Lord’s word always succeeds in each individual and collective story of mankind. Elisha, who is a man of God, gives out all the bread he had received to about a hundred persons for their sustenance. Yet notwithstanding the great number, there was still bread left for others to eat from. The Lord had indeed proven His abundance.

Ephesians. St Paul reminds us that we should always assume to perform God’s Will as baptized persons. We can do this in full union between us as we all have a single hope which in itself keeps us united. The hope is that we may achieve life everlasting.

St John. Before believing the words Jesus told them, his listeners were more faithful because they had witnessed the working of miracles and other signs rather than because they "really" believed. Thus Jesus wanted to perform a very big miracle before giving them the real, heavenly bread.
