Dear Brother in Islam, Assalamo Alaikum!

May Allah help you in understanding Qur’an, and act upon it, Amen!

Here is your question:

I was reading the Qur’an and I was wondering if you could help explain a verse of the Qur’an to me with regards to surah al Baqarah verse 254 where Allah says that no intercession will be allowed on the Day of Judgment. But I read elsewhere Allah will allow it? Could you please help to answer this query?

ANSWER:

To understand the Qur'anic ayat, one should study the ayahs before and after the one in question well.

Let us then see what the Qur’an is saying in these ayahs. Allah says the people of different religion fight with each other over the preference of their religion.

Muslims are advised to spend their wealth in the cause of their religion. This spending is a requirement of Tauheed that is fully explained in the Ayat ul Kursi (Verse of the Chair) that immediately follows (Syed Qutub). Thus, the ayat says that those who do not spend in the cause of their religion should not entertain the idea of intercession, i.e. they should not remain ignorant, in wishful thinking, of the fact that they will become transgressors. Allah is inciting on the righteous action, and warns of the consequences of deliberate negligence or transgression.

Muslims should note that wherever the ayahs talk about intercession, the idea is based on the permission of Allah only. Allah may not permit some to intercede on some other's behalf. Thus, there are no contradictions or confusion.

May Allah help us in performing our duties as Muslims, Amen! Wassalam,
