Assalam alaikum. Alhumdulillah we are doing well out here and pray the same for all of you. Samia has got a little query please clarify with reference to Islamic views (Her sister Nazia has already written to you). Nazia's husband (Nihal) had recommended someone to his firm for some Contract . That person got the Contract due to Nihal's recommendations. Third person approached the Contractor and demanded a share in his profit on Nihal's behalf and handed over a portion of that amount to Nazia in spite of Nihal refusing to accept it. Nazia called us and wanted to know whether it is halal and whether they can use it? we thought that you are the best judge so recommended her to seek your guidance by writing the full details to you. What do you suggest whether that amount is legible and if not how to dispose it off.

Dear Nusrat Dua'en

It was indeed a pleasure to receive your mail after a long time.

It is also good to know that you and your sister-in-law are trying to lead your life according to dictates of Islam. May Allah accept this from all of you, Amen!

Anyway, according to your description the amount received on behalf of Nihal is not Halal. It is either interest or bribe. Let me explain.

In a hadith, it is said that a person recommended someone for a job and he got it. The person who got a job gave a gift to the recommender as a token of thanks. When the Prophet (S) heard about it, he said, "It is one of the major type of interest", and he got it returned (Abu Amama, Abu Dawood).

To recommend some one who is needy and qualified for any thing is a good deed.
Allah says that there is a reward for the recommender who recommends without any greed of return or payment. Nihal will, insha Allah, get that reward. But accepting some money from someone because of this recommendation is taking interest, and thus not only spoiling the reward, but inviting punishment of Allah as well.

Now what to do of that money that Nazia accepted? It is not her money. She should give it to some very very poor Muslim. For a Muslim who hardly gets any thing to eat or dress, it is halal for him. Nazia will not get any reward of charity, because it is not her money. She is only trying to save herself from it.

Wallaho Alam bith-thawab (Allah knows best).
