BLOODY, DANGEROUS AND FALSE?

MUSLIMS AND THE WEST

Second Edition (297 pages)

By Khan Hussan Zia

There has been a heightened level of interest in Islam in the western circles ever since the Iranian revolution that deposed the shah in 1979. The destruction of the World Trade Centre and the US-led occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq that followed have added a whole new dimension to it. The information about Islam is managed and presented almost exclusively by the western media even in the Muslim countries. In most cases it is distorted, tendentious and based on ignorance. The few Muslim writers who are able to express their views, for whatever reasons, seem to reflect and regurgitate what is presented by the western media that only helps to compound the confusion.

As an example, the world has been subjected to unprecedented turbulence and violence ever since three thousand or so innocent American lives were lost in an act of terrorism in September 2001. Hardly a day passes without some reference to the atrocity. But we seldom hear about the more than three and a half million equally innocent Muslim men, women and children who have been systematically massacred in religious cleansing and wars waged or supported by the West in the past twenty-five years alone or the more than eight and a half million Muslim refugees who have been driven out of their homes and are being made to live in squalid camps scattered around the world.

'Muslims and the West, a Muslim Perspective is an attempt to break the vicious cycle of misrepresentation and correct the balance by presenting the Muslim perspective of the inter-action between Islam and the West. If there is to be any peace in the world there has to be an understanding of all the issues, interests and points of view. The book fills the void by depicting of how the Muslims at large think and feel about various events in the world. It examines the historical background and circumstances starting from the Muslim defeat of the Romans in the Middle East and the occupation of Spain right up to the second US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and its aftermath.

The author believes that the ongoing demonisation and persecution of the Muslims by the West is no accident but part of a deliberate campaign that became evident when Professor Bernard Lewis first wrote ‘The Roots of Muslim Rage’ in the Atlantic Monthly in 1989 and was later followed by Samuel Huntington’s ‘The Clash of Civilizations’. The book answers criticism and presents a wealth of facts and information not only about Islam but also about the West itself. To reduce the possibility of prejudice the sources quoted are mostly non-Muslim and of western origin. The discussion is frank and forthright, the tone unapologetic and conclusions pertinent, objective and fair. Any serious student of international affairs and geo-politics will find it refreshingly different, interesting and useful.

Here are first few pages of the book that contain the CONTENTS and the INTRODUCTION chapter.

The author served in the Pakistan Navy before making his home in Canada. His other books include ‘The Pathans of Jullunder’ and ‘Soft War on Pakistan’.
