Chapter 3: Go-Ken Combo

Morita-kun and Miyake-kun’s friendship go a long way back. They had been friends even before they became a part of V6. Back when they were still both members of Johnny’s Jr., they even had this special thing that they do called "Go-Ken Combo". In addition, they both enjoyed teasing Sakamoto-san about his age, secretly of course -- unless they couldn’t help it.

It was already 2 A.M. We were in the set of one of our variety shows when I noticed Morita-kun and Miyake-kun creeping behind Sakamoto-san who was sleeping noiselessly on a chair. The two mischievous (and not to mention, wide-awake) boys were clearly looking for something fun to do. I watched in quiet anticipation at the prank that was about to befall poor Sakamoto-san.

From nowhere (or maybe, from the Props Department) a feather appeared in Miyake-kun’s hand. Slowly he started running it across the sleeping man’s nostrils. Sakamoto-san shuffled and sniffed. Then, Morita-kun snatched the feather from Miyake-kun and tickled Sakamoto-san’s ear, which made the poor man wake up with a start, his leg jerking forward, tripping the boy who was bringing a cup of hot coffee to the director. Needless to say, the director got his coffee -- all over him, cup and all.

Sakamoto-san apologized fervently, but the director didn’t seem quite satisfied with it. He snapped at Sakamoto-san for his ruined new shirt and walked out.

Sakamoto-san’s eyes were ablazed as he searched for the guilty ones who played the dirty trick on him. He saw me standing near (hopefully not near enough to see me fighting back laughter).

"You saw what happened, huh?"

I bit my lower lip, still fighting.

"Who did it?" he demanded, grabbing me by the shoulders.

I tore my gaze away from him, fearing I might laugh at his face.

"WHO?"

I shrugged my shoulders.

"K’so," he remarked grouchily, brushing me aside as he walked past me.

When I was so sure I was beyond hearing distance, that was the time I laughed my heart out. Then, I felt a hand on my shoulder.

"Thanks."

I turned around and saw Miyake-kun and Morita-kun, looking at me, giggling.

"You didn’t tell on us."

"Well, I couldn’t," I replied.

"I knew he wouldn’t tell on us," Morita-kun told Miyake-kun.

"No, I mean I really *couldn’t*," I explained. "I was trying to keep myself from laughing."

And the two boys laughed.

"It was getting boring," explained Morita-kun. "We just had to amuse ourselves."

Miyake-kun agreed. "Yeah, it’s not exactly fun waiting at 2 in the morning,"

"Maybe I should bring my guitar next time," I suggested.

"You have a guitar?" they remarked in unison.

I nodded.

"Do you know how to play it?" Miyake-kun asked excitedly.

"Un," I answered to them both.

"Cool!" exclaimed Morita-kun.

"Yeah, cool! Maybe you could teach us how to play!"

"Sure," I smiled. "I’d be glad to teach Miyake-kun and Morita-kun next time."

"Ken."

"Eh?"

"Call me Ken," Miyake-kun smiled at me.

"Ken," I repeated like we were meeting for the first time.

"Un, we’ve been working together for some time now, don’t you think it’s about time you call us by just our first names?"

"Yeah, quit being so polite," Morita-kun winked, punching my shoulder lightly. "Call me Go."

"Go," I repeated, then nodded, "Wakatta."

At that moment, Sakamoto-san re-entered the room.

Go’s eyes became saucer-like as they met with Sakamoto-san’s furious ones. "Uh-oh! Old fart Sakamoto is back! Run! Quick!"

And run I did with my two new friends: Ken and Go.
