The third and main migration began Tuesday, April 20, 1734, when the first family left Berthelsdorf, Germany. The emigrants embarked on the Elbe River for Altona, Denmark, on April 28, and on May 20 reached their destination. On June 21 they embarked on the ship Saint Andrew, and on July 29, Plymouth, England, was reached. They first saw land of the New World on September 17, and on September 22 actual landing in Philadelphia took place.

Palatines imported in the Ship, Saint Andrew, John Stedman, Master, from Rotterdam, Netherlands, but last from Plymouth, England, as per Clearance thence. Qualified Sept. 12, 1734 [Old style] at Philadelphia, PA.

Thrilling Experiences of Schwenkfelders in Coming to State of Pennsylvania

On the twenty-second day of September in the year of 1724, the small English sailing vessel, the St. Andrew, chartered and finance entirely by Messrs. von Byruschause of Haarlem, hitherto unknown friends of the hundred and eighty four exiled souls on board, entered the harbor of Philadelphia after a weary and perilous journey of twenty- three weeks and one day.

Escaped by night from the Rhine Palatinate, leaving behind lands, flocks, herds, graves of hundreds bonded to them by ties of blood and suffering, migrating for eight years through Germany with only such things as could be carried, enduring the perils and discomforts of a long ocean voyage to America, and having successfully landed, these Schwenkfelder families, true to their make-up, on bended knees thanked Almighty God for a safe deliverance.

The next day, September twenty-fourth, was celebrated by all as a day of thanksgiving for being delivered out of the hands of their prosecutors; for friends raised up in time of need; and for guidance into a land of religious freedom. Early in the morning they gathered in an open field at the corner of Market and Fourth streets, Philadelphia. Their noonday meal consisted of nothing but bread and applebutter but like the Pilgrim Fathers they were grateful for a frugal meal. This Day of Thanksgiving or "Applebutter Day" as it has come to be called, has been so observed for a hundred and ninety-four years with one exception. In the year 1776 the gathering was to be held in Perkiomen Valley, near Palm, but on hearing that the British were near at hand they hurried back to their homes. It is said that no other group of immigrants in the United States has so faithfully observed a special thanksgiving day.

The little band which had passed through so many trials together were now to separate. Some settled within the present limits of the city of Philadelphia, in the neighborhood of Chestnut Hill. Others went to the present counties of Montgomery, Lehigh and Berks, there to convert the wilderness into happy homes which have been enjoyed by their descendants to this day.

The term Schwenkfelder is not so well known in religious circles in America as Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Baptist and such Protestant denominations of the Reformation. The church body was named after its founder, Casper von Schwenkfeld, a German nobleman who forsook the courts and became an evangelist and author on religious subjects. Together with Luther he assailed the abuses of the Church of Rome. Later, however, he and Luther came to differ on several important doctrines such as consubstantiation, transubstantiation and infant baptism. After some friendly controversy Luther wrote him, "Either you or I must be in bond service of the Devil because we both appeal to the Word of God." Troubles began for Schwenkfeld and his following. Cut off from fellowship with Luther and the Lutherans, he was also an object of hatred by the Catholics. Ferdinand, the king of Bohemia and later Emperor of Germany, ordered extreme measures of repression.

Their books and church buildings were burned, no funerals could be held-their dead being thrown into ditches in "cattle-ways"-women were chained in cold attics with not even straw for a bed and froze to death, men were dragged in chains to Catholic services, no marriage under their ceremony was valid, and to prevent escape from the horrible situation the people were forbidden to sell their property, or under any pretext to leave the country.

The highways were patrolled. Severe penalties were imposed upon any person buying property from a Schwenkfelder or assisting him to escape. Persons were put to death for harboring an Anabaptist as the Schwenkfelders were called. In spite of this severe repression their numbers increased. "The blood of martyrs became the seed of the church." For two hundred years after Schwenkfeld's death the church held together, and then came relief, in an invitation from William Penn. But only forty-nine families, or one hundred and eighty-four souls all told, were able to make their escape at this time. Several smaller migrations occurred before 1737, one of which is chronicled as consisting of only one immigrant.

At Pennsburg, in the beautiful Perkiomen Valley stands one of the most unique and interesting museums to be found in the world. It is said that there is only one other of its plan and purpose in existence and that is in Amsterdam. In this combination museum and library, called the Schwenkfelder Historical Library is a collection of precious documents of the Schwenkfelder families. Here are the documents and photographs of documents found in Selesia, the birthplace and early home of the exiles, and in other parts of Germany; here are also the records of births, deaths, marriages, land grants, etc., in the new land; here are the private letters written to the Fatherland, private diaries, a letter from Frederick the Greta written in 1742 inviting the exiles back to Selesia with a promise of restoration of property, surveyor's maps and military records.

In a double fire-proof vault reposes their most highly prized relics, the original Ship List of the St. Andrew and the German Bible used by Casper von Schwenkfeld containing his autograph and marginal notes in his own hand-writing. This bible was printed at Worms in 1529 and this edition is the first of the combination Bibles to appear in the German language after the beginning of the Reformation. It is known as the Worms Bible and antedates the complete Luther Bible by three years. In 1890 the late Dr. Chester D. Hartranft, president of Hartford Theological Seminary, Conn.., found this Bible in Europe and brought it to America.

The "Oath List" in the original also, occupies the vault. Among many interesting books of post-colonial time is a Bible printed nine years before Columbus discovered America. This has hand drawings of God and Noah. One will also find an almanac used in 1752 in which September has only nineteen days.

The diary of the Rev. Christopher Schultz, kept on the journey across the Atlantic in 1734 is here. The births, deaths, burials at sea, illnesses, shift of the winds, the big fish seen, the food and drink, quarrels, etc., are discussed in this daily account. In this museum are a highly decorated and unusual looking bedstead and wardrobe brought from Selesia. Three chests of the same decorative design and color scheme which came along on the St. Andrew make this voyage most realistic. Many farming implements, household utensils, furniture and dishes made by the hands of the exiles and used in their homes here are on exhibition. Among the families enthusiastic in collecting records and relics during the past thirty years are the Kriebels, Hartranfts, Weigands, Dr. Elmer E. S. Johnson and Schultzes. From archives in Germany it was learned that among the exiles were twenty-nine spinners, three shoemakers, three linen weavers, five carpenters, nine day laborers, six dealers, one cabinet maker, one tailor and five farmers. There were ten widows having thirty-one children who had to depend on the rest. Most of them upon their arrival secured land and became farmers in what we now know as a "garden spot of the World," the rich southeast plain of Pennsylvania.

Their descendants have been found in all occupations of life. There have been preachers, teachers, doctors, lawyers, judges, senators and governors. Among the inventors was the Krauss family, inventors of the first pipe organs in this country, and the grandfather clocks which bring such fabulous prices these days. They invented a few electrical appliances as well, and were makers of the first threshing machines in the land. When the Factory Age came in, these hand workers last their business. One of the Schwenkfelders who served the state politically was the late John Frederick Hartranft, Civil war hero and ex-governor of Pennsylvania. General Hartranft was sixth in line from Tobais Hartranft whose name appears on the "ShipList" and the "Oath List."

The Schwenkfelder families have always been characterized by the morality and simplicity of a stern and simple religion. Their manners and dress have changed but their religious principles and virtues remain the "constant and unvarying." Judge of the Supreme Court John Heydrick wrote four days before his death, "I shall never forget that the late Senator Yeakle told me that in his researches preparatory to the publication of the Genealogical Record of the Schwenkfelders he has not heard of a single descendant of the immigrant Schwenkfelders of 1734 who had been convicted or even suspected of an immoral act." And the late governor Pennypacker has said "The Schwenkfelders who immigrated in a body to Pennsylvania were the most intelligent people who came to America in the Colonial Period." The task committed to them by destiny seems to have been done well, and the generations following have also performed in a highly-creditable way.

The forthgoing article is of special local interest to many descendants of one of the Schwenkfelder immigrants-Tobias Hartranft whose name in his own handwriting is shown on the "Ship List" and the "OathList."

Between the years of 1810 and 1815 Andreas Hartranft of direct line of Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County, moved with his young wife, Mary Magdalena Frankenberger, to a piece of land near the River Church, four miles from Watsontown, Pa. Here he built himself a home and reared a family of ten children, the names of whom in order of age were: Henry C., Conrad, Mary M.( Mrs. John Moyer), John B., William, Samuel, Elizabeth (Mrs. Joseph Sager), Joseph, Andrew Jackson and George W., all of whom are deceased. Upon the death of his father Henry C. took the farm, and in turn established a large family, many of whom are living. They are: John, aged ninety-three, residing in Bay City, Michigan, William A., Jefferson, Uriah Conrad, Mary Elizabeth (Mrs. John Nicely), Sarah Ella (Mrs. George Stauffer), Vinnetta Jane (Mrs. John Heiney), Samuel Cloyd, Charles Ward, Joseph Elmer, Frank Lincoln, George Calvin, Margarete, Harry Elwood. Upon the death of Henry Hartranft, Charles Ward came into possession of the farm and still lives there with his son, Lawrence. A small grandchild of Charles makes the fifth generation to have lived in this old homestead.

HISTORY

While information for the 1923 publication of The Genealogical Record of the Schwenkfelder Families was being collected, an interest in the genealogy and history of the Schwenkfelders was raised among the immigrant descendants. As a result, it was proposed that an organization, similar to the Mayflower Society, be founded by the descendants of those Schwenkfelders who arrived during the years 1731-1737.

Several organizational meetings were held and in February 1921 a constitution was adopted and officers of the new organization were elected. The first meeting of the Society of the Descendants of the Schwenkfeldian Exiles was held on April 29, 1921, in the assembly hall of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The Secretary presented the names of 126 men and women who made up the Charter membership.

The original plans called for two meetings per year. A Spring meeting in the country, where most of the descendants lived, and a Fall meeting in Philadelphia, when the election of officers would be held. More recently, the Society has adopted a single meeting held during October at the Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center in Pennsburg, PA.

Topics of Schwenkfeldian interest are presented at the meetings. Occasionally, on-site meetings are held at meeting houses, cemeteries, schools, and other places of interest connected with our ancestors. Good fellowship is promoted in the social hour that follows.

SCHWENKFELDER BEGINNINGS

The Schwenkfelder religion goes back 200 years before the Exiles left their homes in Silesia, to the writings and speeches of a wealthy nobleman named Caspar Schwenckfeld von Ossig. A contemporary of Martin Luther, he engaged in many debates on religion with this great man. Gradually, he came to have a considerable following of men and women who believed as he did. This belief centered upon an Inner Light, which was to guide their conduct, and later was embodied in books that came into possession of George Fox of England, who adopted the ideas into his philosophy which emerged as Quakerism. In fact, some books call the Schwenkfelders German Quakers. No less authority than Dr. Rufus Jones attested to the vital influence of Schwenckfeld upon the thought of the Quakers.

This religious thought in Silesia did not conform with the ideas of the rulers who paid allegiance to the Church of Rome. Some Jesuit priests were sent by Emperor Charles to convert the Schwenkfelders who, however, believed in liberty of conscience and paid fines rather than have their children baptized by the Jesuits. They saw their dead refused burial in the village plot because they dared to oppose the might of Rome and the Lutheran Church (see The Viehweg at Harpersdorf – "What It is and Why We Care"). In 1732, there was a chapel built in Harpersdorf with the fines our ancestors paid rather than worship as the Pope and Emperor dictated. This chapel was still in existence and used for services into the 1940’s.

Finally they were driven from their homes and found refuge for eight years in Saxony under Count Ludwig von Zinzendorf, supporter of the Moravians. He then was forced to withdraw his protection and our ancestors were given a period of grace not to exceed one year. Although they were forbidden to emigrate, on Tuesday, April 20, 1734, a band of 176 persons deserted their homes, sailed down the Elbe River, and found refuge in Holland. Dutch Mennonites gave them food and shelter and paid for passage on the ship St. Andrew bound for Philadelphia, PA. Nine of this group died and were buried at sea on route.

ARRIVAL IN PHILADELPHIA

Six groups of Exiles, totaling 209 persons and 52 families, arrived in Philadelphia, 1731 to 1737, but the largest -- the third -- contained 44 families and 170 persons. The day after they arrived, the able-bodied men affirmed allegiance to the British King, George II, and the following day, perhaps in the nearby Friends meeting house, all of the group held a thanksgiving service for their safe arrival in a land of religious tolerance. Every year thereafter on the anniversary a similar service has been held in one of the Schwenkfelder Churches. Currently it is celebrated on the Sunday closest to September 24. A number of religious and historical addresses are presented and a meal of bread, butter, and apple butter is enjoyed, commemorating their first Day of Remembrance (Gedaechtnis-tag). It is said that this is the only group of religious exiles who, from the first, have perpetuated their arrival here with an annual celebration of thanksgiving. Honorable Samuel W. Pennypacker, Governor of Pennsylvania, mentioned this fact in his address delivered on September 24, 1908, at the 175th Schwenkfelder Day of Remembrance.

There was a high degree of literacy among these immigrants and some brilliant scholars. One Schwenkfelder, The Rev. Balthasar Hoffman, conducted a correspondence course in Hebrew before the Declaration of Independence was signed. The early settlers built homes for themselves in Salford, Towamencin, and Worcester Township areas of Pennsylvania, as well as in the Upper District of Hereford and Upper Hanover townships of the Perkiomen Valley, where many descendants now reside.

HISTORICAL EVENTS

On September 24, 1884, at the 150th Gedaechtnis-tag, the speaker, Dr. Chester Hartranft, challenged the Schwenkfelder congregation to collect and publish a definitive edition of Schwenckfeld's writings. Seventy-seven years later, in 1961, the last of 19 large volumes making up the Corpus Schwenkfeldianorum appeared. The editorial and historical materials collected during this endeavor are preserved in the Schwenkfelder Library and Heritage Center. The Corpus consists of 1252 documents, 17,886 pages (covering 408 different theological topics) written by Schwenckfeld during the forty years, 1521-1561.

On the bicentennial anniversary of the moving of the group from Silesia to Saxony, the Society in 1926 presented an elaborate pageant of the early days, with script by Dr. Samuel K. Brecht. The pictures taken were published by the Society as an issue of The Exile Herald, a modest publication that was issued for members. Another pageant was presented in 1934 during the bicentennial celebration and again in 1976, the 250th anniversary.

The completion of the Corpus Schwenkfeldianorum in 1961 resulted in a new understanding of Reformation history and of Schwenckfeld's role therein. In 1984, on the 250th anniversary of the Exiles' safe arrival in the New World, a colloquium was sponsored by the Schwenkfelder Library. A number of revisionist books and papers had appeared in 1961 and several of the authors spoke at the colloquium. In addition to the scholarly lectures, topics of popular interest relative to life in Pennsylvania were presented.

Notes for RACHEL SCHAUP:

Mrs. Jessie Hartranft died very suddenly on Tuesday evening. Mrs Hartranft fell fifty two years ago and injured her side which has bothered her ever since. She took a severe spell on Monday and on Tuesday the injury broke out and on account of her advanced years, she grew weaker and very suddenly expired. Deceased was born in Lewistown, PA near Tamaqua in July 1830 and came to Lansford in 1851 where she has resided since.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Hartranft were old, but the strong bonds of love that united these old folks were manifested every day. Mr. Hartranft leaves for his work shortly after dinner daily and the old lady's daily custom was to hand him his dinner pail after mounting his little pony to go to work.

She would watch him until he departed with as much love in her kindly old face as a bride.

She leaves a husband, four sons and three daughters. The funeral will be held this afternoon in Summit Hill, PA. Rev. Gable will officiate.

Mr Henry Hartranft

Father received a letter from the Gov. a few days ago and wants some information that he was not able to give. Perhaps you can give it. He has been tracing up our ancestry and wants to know the name of your great grandfather - his first name. Father's father's name was Lennord also his grandfather's but he cannot get back any further and if you can give us any information we would be glad to hear from you. He has traced it back to 1669 and that is the only missing link. Father thought perhaps you might of heard your father mention his grand fathers name. That is your great grandfather

I heard Uriah was coming in this fall. Tell him to come and see us. Remember us to all the family. We are well and hoping this will find you the same. Please let us know as soon as possible

Mrs. Sue{?} Hartranft

Notes for ANNIE HARTRANFT:

Copy of a letter to Mrs. Sue Hartranft De Haas from

Annie Hartranft, of Norristown, Pa.,

Daughter of Ex-Governor John F. Hartranft of PA

There is only one Hartranft's name signed to the oath of allegiance to King George, Tobias Hartranft, as he signs himself. The passenger list of men who came over has only Tobias, in the list of women and children, Barbara, who was his wife, I find and their children, George, Melchoir and Abraham (these must have been the three brothers) Tobias' daughters were Maria and Rosina. In a letter to father from Daniel Shulty I find the following information. In a manuscript list of names of the members connected with the Schwenkfelder Society in the month of August A.D. 1740 and subsequently, I find thirteen Hartrantfs:

Tobias died October 4th, 1758, aged seventy-four years.

Barbara, his wife, late Barbara Yeahle, died Feb. 15, 1764.

Their sons, George died Nov. 11, 1759.

Abraham married to Susanna Nov. 3, 1747, died Dec. 12, 1766.

Melchoir, died Nov. 3, 1760, aged thirty-four years.

Maria, a daughter, married to Melchoir Shulty April 29, 1746 - died Dec. 9, 1799.

Rosina, the other daughter,-------------------------

Abraham and his wife had the following issue:

Christopher, born Oct. 5, 1748

Abraham, born April 2, 1750

John, born April 21, 1753

Leonard, born 1757 died Aug. 26, 1758, subsequently another son was born and also named Leonard.

William died 1754

Barbara born 1751

Maria born 1761

Our particular line of ancestors, I find underscored and have done the same.

The following is from a manuscript in the Philadelphia Historical Society "December 2, 1742, Tobias Hotrampft, Dr.(this is copied exactly as the letter*) To 100 acres in upper Hanover Township, Philadelphia County, granted by warrant to Andrew Shitler, who not complying with the terms, has forfeited his right. Do. Tobias Hotrompft, Dr.* to thirty are more adjoining the same" and another extract, "In a subscription amounting to 206 pounds by forty-three Schwenkfelders, of lower Salford Township, Philadelphia County, November 13, 1756, to the Friendly Association to aid in preserving peace with the Indians, is found the name of Melchoir Hartranft in which they state "As late emigrants from Silesia and desiring to assist in the above mentioned purpose and further we add, are a few families of a dispersed people in Silesia who have always under God's blessing, maintaining themselves by the labor of their hands only."

These are both from the amen letter written to Father in 1875. I think the Leonard, who was born around 1760 must have had a son Leonard, who was your grandfather and my great grandfather. I think father said there was a father and son of the same name. I hope you will find some interest in these odds and ends I have gleaned. If I have more time I might find more. I hope you can understand as I have been called away to see after things many times. I can hardly understand what I have tried to tell myself.

With Love,

Annie Hartranft
