far as we could read it correctly. This is about 4 months at odds with the

birth date we have, which is not verified. The date was either the 4th or 24th

of Feb. Personal knowledge recorded by Martha Jane McGlaughlin Snyder gives

death date as MAR 1884 and death place as York Twp., Athens Cty. This is

unlikely due to age and does not match official records. AF says place is York

Twp.

Marker on grave says that he fought in the war of 1812.

  He served as a private in the 1st Regiment of Virginia Militia during War of 1812 under Captain Davis. He enlisted at Clarksburg, Virginia. After the war he moved to Gallia Co, Ohio. Buried in Mace Cemetery in Vinton Co, Ohio. (Rex Ray)

record that actually indicates that James is the son of William, but we find

him near William in the 1850 and 1860 census records. The middle initial L.

could stand for Lyons, which would have been his mother's maiden name. The

only inconsistency is that the 1850 and 1860 census and his death record state

that he was born in Va. Since both parents were also, it is conceivable that

Polly went home to have her first child.

He was a preacher, coal miner and a barber. His son Ralph would say he`d be gone maybe 6 months at a time, show up for supper some evening, hang up his der by hat and ask `what`s for supper?` with no question of his whereabouts. When a sked about his parents or family he`d say `none of your damned business`. 1900 Athens Co. census: listed him born Feb. 1875, his father born in Pennsylvania a nd his mother born in Virginia (now West Virginia). Had a really likeable pe rsonality, that people were drawn to him as a young man. He was quite the "cut- up". He could sing,...dance the Irish Jig...quote bible verses, and after he wa s no longer involved with the church, he would go into saloons with his friends , and take bets on his ability to quote scriptures. Give him the book of, chapt er, and verse number and he could quote it...he won lots of drinks for himself and his friends.

Jack J. McGlaughlin, 56, of Stockport, Route 1, died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Good Samaritan Medical Center following a long illness. Mr. McGlaughlin was born Aug. 28, 1926, at Glouster, the son of Willard and Mabel Moody McGlaughlin. A retired farmer and school bus driver, he was a member of Calvary Baptist Church at Philo and was a Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Milhoan; five daughters, Mrs. Sue Duvall of Malta, Mrs. Barbara Shumate of Zanesville, Mrs. Carolyn Elliott of Stockport, Mrs. Glenna Mollahan of Blue Rock and Mrs. Linda Williams of Crooksville; four brothers, Joe of Newark, Glenn of Somerset, Pat of Tampa, Fla, and Bill of Sarasota, Fla., one sister, Mrs. Donna Grant of Newark; and 10 grandchildren. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Stone-Matheney Funeral Home in Chesterhill, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Glenn Smith officiating. Burial will be in Pennsville Cemetery.
