Carter

James and Abigail Coker Churchman's daughter Malinda E., married Joseph Carter in Johnson County, Arkansas, 12 Nov 1861. Joseph was a native of England, born c. 1838, and was a farmer. He had immigrated from England as a teenager.  They had one son, William Joseph Carter, born 18 August 1862 in Spielerville, Johnson County, Arkansas. Will died 07 June 1946, and is buried at McKendree Cemetery near Subiaco, Arkansas.

Joseph Carter joined the union army as a member of Company H, 1st Regiment, Arkansas Volunteer Infantry (U.S.), 10 Mar 1863. He enlisted as a private at Ft Smith, and was mustered in at Fayetteville. Personal description at time of enlistment is as follows: Age 23, height 6 feet 1 inch, complexion fair, eyes blue, hair light in color. Joseph died of a fever at Camp McCulloch, near Springfield, Mo. on either 30 April or 2 May 1863. Both dates are given on affidavits provided in order for his wife to claim her pension. The place of death is identified variously as Crane Creek, Camp McCullar, and Camp McCullar Store.  Joseph is buried in a military cemetery near Springfield, Mo.

I have checked Ft Smith, AR naturalization records, military cemetery listings, ships manifests, and the 1860 Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia censuses for Joseph Carter without success.
