Frethias W. Lloyd/Loyd
The oldest Lloyd/Loyd ancestor I have found, is Frethias (or Freethias) W. Lloyd/Loyd According to census records he was born in Kentucky c. 1799.
Tuscaloosa County, Alabama records show that he married Mary (Polly) Neal 4 Sept 1823. She was born c. 1804, also in Kentucky.
I found records of two other Lloyd/Loyd with this unusual first name. Frethias Lloyd/Loyd (with four first name variations) is listed in the tax records and censuses for Livingston County, Kentucky for the years 1810 through 1840. He lived along Clay Lick Creek where he purchased 50 acres of land in 1810, and another 190 acres in 1820. The same Frethias Lloyd/Loyd married twice in Greene County, Tennessee. Another researcher says she is sure that this Frethias or his brother Nicholas is the father of Frethias W. Descendant charts for each do not list Frethias W., but both have a gap in births during the 1799/1800 time frame. Frethias the elder, lived all his adult life in Livingston County, Kentucky, and his brother Nicholas in Wayne Co. That might be why there were several other Loyd families in Wayne County when F. W. lived there. Another Frethias Lloyd is found on the 1880 census for Tulare Co., CA.
There were no facts found of how Frethias W. Lloyd/Loyd came to be in Alabama. Looking at any map, it is probable that the Tennessee River was the path of choice from northwest Kentucky to the newly opened lands (formerly belonging to the Indians) of northwest Alabama.
Frethias' family was living in Fayette County, Alabama during the 1830 census, and in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama during the 1840 census. This may be due more to the restructuring of the county lines than to moving. Their residence was near the Chickasaw and Choctaw lands of Alabama. According to LDS records, more daughters were born to Frethias and Mary than I have shown. They may have died during childhood since they did not appear on censuses, and I have not included them. The last date I found to prove the Lloyd family were in Alabama was 17 July 1847. On that date, F.W. Lloyd acted as witness at the signing of a will.
By 2 October 1848, they were living in Wayne County, Tennessee, probably because daughter Sarah had initially moved there with her husband, John W. Cypert. On that date, F.W. was appointed by the county court to markout a second class road. Wayne County is due north of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, and near the Tennessee/Alabama border. Shortly after the 1850 census, the Cyperts moved on to Izard County, Arkansas.
At the 1860 census the Lloyds had moved to Sycamore township, Izard County, Arkansas, with the Cypert family living nearby. Daughters Catherine, Ruth, and Mary were no longer shown as members of the family. They may have married or died in Tennessee. Izard County tax records show F. W. Loyd paid poll tax for the year 1861. Frethias died during the period 1870 to 1880, based on censuses. Mary Neal Lloyd’s youngest son Joseph was living with her in Lee township, Pope County, at the time of the 1880 census. At the same time, Joseph’s wife and young son were living with his mother-in-law in Searcy Co. The 1890 census is not available, and I haven't found cemetery records, but Mary probably died soon after 1880, based on her age. According to LDS records, their children were as follows:
1. Sarah Loyd, born 1824 in Alabama, m. John W. Cypert in Tuscaloosa County, Ala. 12 Mar 1845.
2.Catherine Ann (Cathann) Loyd, born c. 1826 in Alabama, may have married in TN.
3.Elizabeth C. Loyd, born c. 1828 in Alabama, m. James F. Stout 10 Nov 1881 in Pope County, Ark.
4.William T. Loyd, born c. 1833 in Alabama, m. Mary Ayers (or Reid according to LDS records) or as I believe, Martha Ann Simmons, in Tennessee.
5.Ruth Loyd, born c. 1840 in Alabama, may have married in TN.
6.Mary Loyd, born c. 1842 in Alabama, may have married in TN.
7.James M. Loyd, born 20 Jul 1846 in Alabama, m1 Nancy R. _____ c. 1866 in Pope Co. Ark, m2 Annie Smith 1897 in Ardmore, OK
8.Joseph N. Loyd, born Jan 1849 in Tennessee, m. Martha Jane Horton at Searcy Co. Ark. c. 1874.
Sarah Lloyd
Sarah Lloyd b. 30 Jun 1824, married 12 March 1845 in Tuscaloosa County Alabama, John W. Cypert, b. 22 Apr 1826 in Wayne County, Tennessee. He was one of twelve Children of John Cypert, b. Tennessee and Nancy (Anderson) Cypert, b. Virginia. He returned to Wayne County with his bride and by 1850, the Cypert family had moved to Arkansas. John and Nancy Anderson Cypert lived in Searcy County until they died. John W. and Sarah moved initially to Izard County where they lived until after the Civil War.
In July 1861, John W. became a commissary for Carver's Confederate regiment until discharged because of measles. After that, he joined J. T. Coffee's (Missouri) regiment as captain of Company C, in which his son Thomas F. also served. Serving with General Sterling Price on his Missouri raid, Thomas F. was taken prisoner, but paroled after nine days. His brother-in-law James M. Loyd was also a member of his company.
In Izard County, John W. served ten years as county treasurer and two years as justice of the peace and associate judge. Sometime after the war the family moved to a part of Fulton County which later became part of Baxter County. In Baxter County he served as probate and county judge from 1882-1886, and 1890-1896. John and Sarah's children were Thomas F., Louisa Ann, Minerva, John H., James R., Mary E., Nancy E., Sarah J., and Alice T.. Sons William F. and Newton L. died as teens.

John H. Cypert b. 21 Dec 1852 in Izard County, AR, was a farmer and stone cutter, later served as deputy sheriff in Baxter County. m. Laura _____.
James R. Cypert b. 31 Dec 1854 in Arkansas, became a farmer in Morrow County, Oregon. m1 Liza Brown, m2 Julia F. Barnett
Mary E. Cypert b. 22 Dec 1856 in Arkansas, m. Hezekiah McCourtney of Lead Hill, Boone County, Arkansas.
Nancy E. Cypert b. 6 Jul 1859 in Arkansas, m. M. B. Parks, a farmer in Baxter County.
Sarah Cypert b. 30 Jan 1862 in Arkansas, m. Henry C. Lewallen who died sometime later. By 1894 she had returned to live with her mother and father.
Alice T. Cypert, b. 8 Mar 1868 in Arkansas, m. W. E. Green of Baxter County. She died 19 Apr 1889, issue unk.
Catherine Ann Lloyd
Catherine Ann was age 24 at the time of the 1850 census and still a member of her father's household. The Lloyds were living in Wayne County, Tennessee at the time. By the 1860 census, she no longer appeared. She must have already married (1851-1859) or died in Tennessee. I have no further information about her.
Elizabeth C. Lloyd
Elizabeth was listed on censuses as Elizabeth or by her nickname Elizira. She must have been considered an old-maid who remained with Frethias and Mary, then with her brother Joseph until age 53, when she married James F. Stout in Pope County, Arkansas. No issue, and they continued to live in Pope County.
William T. Loyd
William T. Loyd married Martha A. Simmons 16 Feb 1854 in Wayne County, TN. Census records list her as Annie. William is listed as William A. Loyd. His middle initial "T" may be incorrect. I found it on only one census. William's family lived in Milan, Gibson County, Tennessee prior to moving to Arkansas (statement based on a conversation with great aunt Fanny at a family reunion). Their children were Columbus, Margaret Elizabeth, John Richard, Thomas J., (Mary?) Frances, and William Newton, with the first four being born in Tennessee.
A family story of my father's is that William T. was killed by bush-whackers or jayhawkers during the Civil War, and that as orphans, John Richard and his siblings rode a wagon train to Pope County, Arkansas. But, William's youngest child was born in 1866. This trek by wagon train from Izard County to Pope County may have occurred after the death of Frethias (see below).
What is known is that a W. T. Loyd enlisted in Company F, 27th Arkansas Infantry, as a 2nd Cpl 21 May 1862. This unit was initially Capt. Hunt’s company, 1st Regiment, McBride’s Brigade, Arkansas Infantry; then became Company F, Shaler’s Regiment Arkansas Infantry, which became the 27th. William joined at Locust Grove in what is now Stone County, Arkansas. By 28 February 1863 he had been promoted to 1st Cpl. The Confederate records are extremely brief and no military record was found for William after 30 April 1863. When William was mustered into his unit June 13, 1862 he had a horse valued at 125 dollars, but the notation was made that he was dismounted the following 29 July.
The 27th helped defend Little Rock in September 1863, before retreating to Benton, where it remained during the winter of 1863. In late March 1864, the 27th was ordered to Shreveport, LA to help counter the advance of union general Nathaniel Banks. They served in the "Red River Campaign" of March-May 1864, including the final battle at Pleasant Hill. They then returned to Arkansas in time to fight at Jenkin's Ferry on April 30, 1864. The regiment then saw little action until the end of the war, when they were surrendered by General Kirby Smith May 26, 1865.
Internet conversations with distant relatives also researching ancestry revealed one who thought she remembered a story that William was wounded in the Civil War and that Annie nursed him for months before he finally died.
Whatever the reason, at the time of the 1870 Izard County, Arkansas census (July/August 1870), both William T. and his wife Annie were absent/deceased. The census shows Columbus (15), and William (5) living with Sarah and John W. Cypert in Union township. The other children; Margaret, John R., Thomas, and Frances were living with Frethias and Mary Lloyd in Rocky Bayou Township.
Columbus L. Loyd
Columbus Lafayette Loyd, born 05 May 1855 in Tennessee, m. Esther Isabelle Roebuck, c. 1877, in Baxter Co., Ark. After his father's death he had been raised by John W. and Sarah Cypert in Baxter County, so he must have chosen to remain there for a while. His family shows up in Oxford, Lafayette County, Mississippi around 1886. In the early 1890's he moved to Oklahoma, perhaps near his uncle James M. Lloyd or his brother John Richard. By the end of the nineteenth century he had moved to Logan County, Arkansas where he lived his remaining days. Columbus and Esther were the parents of Richard Leon , Frances J., John L., Callie D., Rufus, Mittie May, Herman, Cora B., Lillie, Edgar Lee, and James Roy.

John Richard Loyd was born 15 Feb 1858 in Tennessee. He m1 19 Sep 1880 Sarah (Sallie) J. Ray, born c. 1854, in Pope County, Arkansas. m2 07 Aug 1900 in Pope Co., Mary Ann Hays, born 13 Mar 1875 in Tennessee. He died 07 Mar 1913 at Paris, Logan County, Arkansas. He and Sarah were the parents of a daughter (died in infancy and assigned no number) b. c.1881 and buried in a Russellville, Arkansas cemetery, William E., Robert A., Earl C., and Thomas G. According to Earl C. Loyd, there was a last child who died at birth or in infancy, shortly before Sallie. John Richard was engaged in farming in Russett, Johnston County, OK (which was in the Chickasaw Nation at that time) where Sallie died, c. 1899. I checked the cemetery there and found a stone for Sarah Lloyd dated 1853-1899. Adjacent to it is a stone for Elizabeth M. Ray, 1828-1904. This was her mother, Elizabeth Matthews Ray. Elizabeth Ray was a member of John R.'s household during the 1900 census for Pope County, Arkansas. On 07 Aug 1900, he married Mary Ann Hays in Pope county. Their children were Edgar, Grady, J. R. Jr. (who died in childhood), Anna B., and Fanny J, with the last two still living.

Their children were Hershel, Jewel (died in childhood), Gracie (died in infancy), Burl, Ernest, Oscar, and one living. Elbert and Ocie's enterprise seemed to succeed as they engaged in farming near Paris, Arkansas. With the depression, they moved several times, living in Stillwell, OK, and in several locations in AR, along U.S. Highway 71. At the time of Elbert's death in 1942, they were living near McGehee where Elbert was a farm manager.

Ocie died 09 Nov 1975 in Springdale, Washington County, Arkansas where she had lived since shortly after Elbert died. She was buried beside her husband.
William and his sons changed the spelling of their surname from one L to two. When William E. Loyd and family moved to McGehee, Arkansas there was a William B. Loyd already there. Each received mail addressed to the other. A coin was flipped between them to see who would add an extra L to his name. In this way Elbert returned to the original Welsh spelling.
Hershel Gilbert Lloyd, b. 05 Nov 1908 (this is what his tombstone says, but I think it is off by a year since 1908 is recorded in Logan County records as the year Ocie and Elbert married, and the 1920 census indicates his dob as 1909), d. 05 Mar 1971. m1. c. 1935 Lettie Ann Rowland b. Ruth and Mary Lloyd/Loyd
These daughters of Frethias appear on the 1850 census with dates of birth of 1840 and 1842. They do not appear on the 1860 census. They may have married in Tennessee or have died prior to the Lloyd move to Arkansas. The three-volume work "Marriages of Tennessee" lists several Mary's and Mary F's. I did not find an appropriate date of marriage for Ruth.
For reference, I find a Mary F Lloyd m. John J. Alston 3 May 1859. A Mary Finer Lloyd m William T. Gill 12 Dec 1859, an M. J. Lloyd m James Thomason 4 May 1857, and a Mary Loyd m Richard M. Ligon 7 Mar 1860.
James M. Lloyd
James M. left Izard County, Arkansas some time during the Civil War years and joined Company C of a Missouri Cavalry Regiment. His tombstone states he was in the 14th Missouri Cavalry, C.S.A, but the partial roster of this unit, taken at its surrender at Shreveport, La does not list James, and very soon after it was formed its designation was changed to the 13th Missouri Cavalry. I found James in Company C of Coffee's Missouri Cavalry Regiment, first designated the 6th Missouri Cavalry, then the 11th Missouri Cavalry. Company C was commanded by his brother-in-law John W. Cypert, and had as a member John's son, Thomas F. I do not know what caused the difference in unit names.
After the war Jimmy (as he was called) married Nancy R. in Pope County, and they were parents of the following children, all of whom were born there: Thomas, Emma, Margaret J., Florence C., Henry, Uretha, and Oscar. Sometime around 1890, the family moved to Ardmore in the Chickasaw Nation (now Oklahoma).

Margaret J. Loyd, born 15 Mar 1873, died 04 May 1930, buried McAlister Cemetery, Carter Co., Ok. Maggie, as she was known even on her tombstone, was still a member of her father's household at the age of 37, so she probably remained unmarried.

Jimmy's wife Nancy died 06 Jun 1894, and was buried in McAlister Cemetery, Ardmore, Carter Co., Ok. Jimmy married Annie Smith 18 Feb 1897. At the time of the 1900 census they were the parents of one child, John E., along with step-daughter Bessie Egeth (born c. Sep 1893 in Texas).
John E. Lloyd, born c. Nov 1899, Ardmore, OK. No further information.
Jimmy lived to age 81, died 25 Nov 1927, and was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Ardmore, Ok. His gravestone inscription gives his dates of birth and death, and that he was a member of Company C, 14th Missouri Cavalry, instead of the 11th. Sometime after 1915, he had applied for a pension as a C.S.A. veteran. His application number was 1030 and is found on reel 3 of the Oklahoma Confederate Pension Applications microcopy. I know nothing about his wife Annie. I received information recently (May 2000) that Jimmy’s job in Ardmore, was "walking the pipe-line."
Joseph N. Lloyd
Joseph N. Lloyd married Martha Jane Horton c. 1874 in Searcy County, Arkansas. According to the 1900 census, all their children were born in that county and are enumerated as follows: Sallie B., Green B., William A., Elnora, George W., Robert S., Thomas J., and possibly one other. Their oldest son John R., was born c. 1877, and had already left the household at the time of the 1900 census. From county marriage records: John R. Lloyd 17, m. Mary F. (Mollie) Blair 18, 28 Aug 1895.
John R. Lloyd, b. 1877
Sallie B. Lloyd, b. Jul 1882
Green B. Loyd, b. 13 Apr 1886 d. Dec 1975 Concho, AZ (this is Green Berry?)
William A. Lloyd, b. Jan 1888
Elnora Lloyd, b. May 1889
George W. Lloyd, b. Oct 1890
Robert S. Lloyd, b. Apr 1894
Thomas J. Lloyd, b. Apr 1896
The 1880 Arkansas census has Martha J. "Loyed" and her son John R. living with her mother Jane Horton in Searcy County. Joseph is living with his mother Mary, and sister Elizera (Elizabeth) in Yell County.
This is puzzling but any number of reasons might account for this separation. I believe it could have been to help his mother/sister put in a crop, or harvest it, at the time of the census.
