| Dominatly female creatures that come in different species. The Grecian species has the face and breasts of a woman , the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle.. The Egyptian , or Andro- Sphinx, is similar to the Grecian but it doesn't have any wings. The Sphinx lives in Percia, assyria and Phoenicia.. The male sphinx has a beard and long curly hair. The legend of the sphinx says that one of the female sphinx-es was appointed by goddess Hera to punish the Thebes for their drunkeness. The sphinx made a ridle which every Theban which encountered her had to answer correctly to be left alive. Nobody solved the ridle until Oedipus of Corinth approched Thebes and encountered a sphinx while he was drunk. The sphinx asked the usaul riddle : ''What is it that walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three legs in the evening?'' and Oedipus answerd: '' Why a man, of course. He crawls on hands and knees as a baby, walks on two legs as an adult, and suports himself on a stick in the evening of his days.'' The sphinxs was so furious at her defeat that she flung herself into the sea. |
