49 So, what does Rogelio look like? Connie asked. We all look alike, the young man smirked. Connie gathered up his shirt collar and lifted him off the chest. His arms flailed uselessly beside him like a marionette. Okay, okay, Ill be straight with you. Put me down. I cant breathe! I ask again: What does Rogelio look like? Connie said through gritted teeth. Hes tall, light brown skin, dark circles around his eyes. He has short hair, a moustache. He wears leather all the time, a black leather jacket. Connie dropped the kid, and he rubbed his throat, gasping. Thank you for your cooperation, Connie winked at Diane, and the two left the scene to the crime scene investigators.
Dr. Hubley recovered Dianes file from the evidence box that was collected from her apartment when she was kidnapped. She set the file on her desk, opened it, and pulled out the results of the paternity test. She held it up to the light and examined it. There was no lab return address at the top. No technicians signature on the bottom. A phone call to the lab had turned up no record of any test having been performed. She looked up the procedure for a paternity test and called Diane. After hearing the description, Diane agreed that she had never had amniocentesis to collect a fetal blood sample. I would have remembered that, Diane had said. Dr. Hubley turned the paper over and over in her hands, and finally, she decided there was nothing official about the report. It was an obvious attempt to deceive her. She wasnt sure why. But she knew that if Diane accidentally saw this report, she might terminate her pregnancy. Dr. Hubley didnt want that kind of fraud to influence her patient, so she pressed a button. The machine over her trash bin hummed to life. Dr. Hubley dropped the report between the teeth, and it was reduced to shreds in less than a second. Dr. Hubley silenced the monster with another button press.
Diane and Connie jumped out of their chairs when Olivo and Alex Rodriguez entered the squad room with a jubilant walk. Lieutenant Tony Rodriguez came out of his office to greet the men. So, spill it! Howd it go? Diane asked. Lieutenant, Im going to let Alex give the good news, Olivo bowed in deference to Rodriguez. The rest of the squad gathered around to listen.
