Im sorry about this, Connie. It seems you have arrived in the middle of a little squad drama, Diane half-smiled at her.

I think you should have it. And keep it. And I want to be a part of its life, Danny continued without missing a beat.

Maybe its not yours, Danny. Consider that.

Its mine. I know its mine. It has to be. Diane, whatever it is, we can work it out.

No, Danny, we cant. Im in love with someone else, Diane whispered. Or something else, she thought.

Diane, youre pregnant? Connie stammered.

Yeah, Diane nodded. I guess everyone but Greg and Baldwin knows now.

Ill be with you in the delivery room, Danny said. Anything, Ill do anything to make it easier on you, including support you when you cant work on the streets any more.

Diane sighed. Thats sweet, Danny. Really. Ill be fine.

The waitress arrived to take their orders.

The radio in the unmarked police car crackled to life. The pursuit had begun. Alex started his car and put it into gear. He slowly pulled out into traffic on Seventh Avenue, three car lengths behind the black Lexus. He picked up the radio and recorded the first stage of the trip. Unit 1-8-9er Alpha, item on the move, Seventh Avenue North.

10-4.

The black Lexus darted into the left lane, then darted back into the right lane. The police car stayed comfortably back and did not change lanes. Suddenly, the car switched into the left lane and turned left on West Twenty-third Street. The police car continued North on Seventh Avenue. Item Westbound on Twenty-third St.

Unit 1-7-3-Beta, item in view.

10-4.

The black Lexus changed into the right lane for a few minutes through heavy midtown traffic. As the car approached Eleventh Avenue, it suddenly moved into the left lane and turned left.
