39 Im going to let you tell me when youre ready to come off the streets, and when youre ready to go on leave. Uh, great, yeah, okay, Diane stopped and looked closely at her new Lieutenant. Boss, can I ask you a favor? Yeah, Tony smiled warmly. Can you keep this under your hat? I dont want the squad to know yet. I want to tell them in my own time. Okay? Fair enough. Thanks. Thanks a lot, Diane smiled more broadly than she had in weeks. She left Tonys office, tossing another grateful nod over her shoulder as she walked out.
Andy put down his fork and rolled his eyes when the knocking started. What do you think, pal? Should I answer it? he asked Theo. Sure, Daddy, Theo smiled. It might be Aunt Katie. Andy stood and straightened his shirt, then ran his hands through his hair. He smiled and opened the door. When he saw it was Danny, his face fell and he said, What do you want? Im sorry Andy. Im bothering you during dinner, arent I? Danny looked in at Theo. He stepped from one foot to the other and he held his raincoat in a crumpled ball in his hands. Come on in, Andy said, stepping back from the door. Whats eating you? Dr. Muzquz told me I should get tested for HIV. From Diane. He WHAT? Andys eyes were nearly ping-pong balls. He told me he couldnt tell me much, but that I should get tested for viruses. And when I asked if it was HIV, he didnt argue. Andy looked from side to side, but he no longer looked worried. Danny noticed his partners change in countenance. What? Oh, nothing. It couldnt hurt you getting tested for stuff like that. Yeah, but off Diane? So, you figure maybe she and that scumbag Denby hit the sheets after all, right? I dont think thats it.
