10 No, youre not, Andy boomed from his side of the desk. PAA John leaned over with a concerned face to see if everyone was all right. Im sick of this. You two have to pull yourselves together. I cant work like this, worrying about whether one of you is going to get me killed. Either drink your coffee and focus, or get the hell out of here before you get someone killed. Andy thundered out of the squad room to cool down in the locker room. Whats wrong, Diane? Really, John asked. Look, for the last time, Im fine, Diane said, but the look of horror had returned to her face. John and Danny looked at each other and shook their heads, and then slowly returned to their work. Diane focused on the fives and cranked them out. She was aware of the furtive looks of concern that everyone shot in her direction for the rest of the afternoon. She put on her best game face, and within an hour, everyone but Andy had forgotten her lapse of concentration. As she stood to leave, Andy stepped over to Diane, and she dreaded what he was about to say to her. Hey, Andy stammered, unable to meet her eyes. Hey, Diane stammered back, her eyes nowhere near where Andys could meet them anyway. Hey, Andy said again, almost reflexively. Diane looked up at his face suddenly, her frightened eyes boring into his for a second before she looked at the floor to shake it off, whatever it was going on with her. Look, Im just going to get right to it. Okay, thats good, Diane nodded, but her eyes were still glued to the floor, and her hands were still shaking. I think youre having a bad reaction to your shooting the other day. Diane huffed as she shook her head in disbelief. She tossed her hair back and stared at the filthy ceiling for a second before opening her mouth to protest. Just let me get this out, Andy continued. Diane pinched her mouth tightly closed and nodded. Irritation had replaced the horror on her face, and that reassured Andy that she still had most of her nuts and screws in place. Look, I got twenty-two years on the force here. Ive seen it a million times. I dont care how bad the skel deserved it. When you have a kill, no matter how clean it is, that stuff still backs up on you. It affects you. Andy, Im really fine. I am. Really.
