58 When did you know about Bob? Diane couldnt wait any longer for Denby to bring up this subject on his own. What do you mean? Whats there to know about Bob? That he was a member of this same cartel. You mean Bob Martinez, my lawyer? Denby looked surprised at this news. Yes, of course I mean Bob Martinez. How close were you going to let me get to him before you told me about him? How close did you get? Thats none of your business, Denby, Diane snapped. Denby looked confused. Diane wondered if it was possible he didnt know about Bob, especially after their little trip to the restroom that first night out of the rehab hospital. Thinking back, Diane said, more calmly, Do you recall any situations where Bob discussed how he found out about you? He said the Job sent him, Denby answered. Okay, Ill be more direct. What was in that envelope that Tiffany gave Bob? He took it with him when the two of you went to the restroom. Diane watched Denbys face closely, wishing again for a heart monitor. She wondered if she could request one from this hospital, if she could make up some excuse. He pulled out a nude picture of Tiffany and showed it to me. Shes not nearly as attractive under her clothes, Denby was clearly flippant for her benefit. Diane rolled her eyes and exhaled. What else, Denby? There were some papers in there with them. I didnt get a good look at them, though, Harry thought for a moment longer. Diane, Im confused. How does that envelope make you think hes in the cartel? Have I missed something? Diane deliberated for a moment, and then she told Harry the story of Jills note. She didnt leave out any details. Watching Denbys face, she saw a hint of jealously as she described the kissing, and she was tempted to elaborate further. Finally, she took pity on his obvious misery as his face registered the enormity of the danger to which he and Diane had been exposed. Im so sorry, Diane. Im so sorry, Denby said, and this time, Diane believed him. Where is he now?
