�Anyway,� Danny said, his patience hanging by its fingernails over a cliff.

�Anyway, so he offers to hang up our coats. I went into the kitchen to start the coffee, and I turned around just as he was hanging up mine. He had his back to me, but I could see that he grabbed that paper out of my coat and stuck it into his. I turned around so he wouldn�t know I had seen him. At that moment I knew.�

�Knew what?�

�What Jill said was true.�

�What did Jill say?� At this point, Danny didn�t really need to hear the contents of the note, but after waiting all this time, he had to hear it.

�Jill�s note said, �Bob is one of them. Denby doesn�t know.��

Danny was shocked at the second half of that message, and thought for a minute.

�If Denby doesn�t know about Bob, then Bob was acting as a spy this whole time at the station, probably to find a way to get Denby out in the open so they could grab him.�

�Danny, I don�t think Denby got into that limo under his own steam. From where I was standing, it looked like that big guy in black picked him up and threw him in there. If he�s still alive, it�ll be a miracle.�

�This is something, Diane. Under any other circumstance, I�d let them have him. But with the note, and the other night��

�What about the other night? What happened?�

Danny explained Denby�s odd behavior in the all-night pharmacy the other night.

�Danny, did you know there is some alcohol content in those products? The ones he was going to buy?�

�No, I don�t think I ever noticed that.�

�Well, there is. He was fighting with the Devil in that store.�

Danny didn�t quite know what to say, so he held Diane�s hand for a few minutes. She looked hurt, confused, concerned, disappointed and frightened, all at once.

�I�m going to take a shower. Will you stay here till I get out? I�m worried Bob might come back when he finds out I gave him a phony note,� Diane said, at last.
