George, look at that piece of paper just dancing there. It reminds me of that video of a plastic bag in American Beauty, the woman said.

Miriam, you are absolutely right. I wonder how long it will dance for us?

They marveled at the little dancing scrap of paper for a few minutes, until the dust devil decided it had much better things to do than to entertain this vapid couple, and quit its duties on the spot. The paper dropped to the ground. George, always the adventurous one, bent down and retrieved the little treasure, grinning. He opened it and read the words inscribed there. His eyes widened, his face went slack, and he looked at Miriam with some fear in his expression.

Oh, George! Miriam said, concerned. What is it? Whats wrong?

Miriam, this is really important information. I need to do something about it right away.

Okay, George. We can eat later. Tell me what we need to do. Miriam was a loving and supportive woman, and George took his strength from her.

George stuffed the paper into his coat pocket, turned to Miriam, and held her hands in his. Suddenly, he dropped to one knee in front of her.

Miriam, I have loved you since the moment I met you. You are my world. My strength. My happiness. My best friend. I cant imagine my life without you. I honestly cant remember how I made it this far in my life without you in it. Miriam, love of my life, will you marry me?

Stunned, Miriam stared at George with her mouth hanging open. Suddenly, she smiled her biggest smile and said, Oh, George! Yes! Yes, of course, Yes!

Miriam pulled George back up to his feet, and they embraced and kissed, laughed and cried. George pulled a ring box out from his pocket and showed her the engagement ring he had been carrying around, waiting for that one sign from God that would tell him the right moment. Curious, Miriam started rifling through his pockets, looking for that magical slip of paper. They laughed and giggled, and George held it over his head, out of her reach. She playfully jumped, trying to grab it from his fingers, trying to tickle him into submission, begging and pleading to see the note. Please, please, George. Tell me, what did the note say? I would be so honored if you would share this sign from God with me. After all, I am to be your wife now. We should share important things like this, shouldnt we?

Youre right, Miriam, of course. I was just playing with you, sweetheart.

George opened the scrap of paper again and held it up to the dim light.

It says: Nike Says: Just Do It; Gothe Says: Do It Now.

Oh, George. Thats beautiful! Miriam gasped.

They kissed and hugged each other tightly once more, then went arm in arm, snuggling against the cold, inside the restaurant to enjoy a warm meal and celebrate their engagement.
