36 Harry jumped out and walked to the front of the bank, and the van moved on to find a place to set up. Don was there, pacing, waiting for him. Im out of here, man, Don said, turning to bolt. Harry grabbed his arm and pulled him back. He stood directly behind him so he could whisper in Dons ear. Dont blow this one, Don. You know those assholes will hurt your boy. You need to stick this one out for your boy. All we do is drop them the bag and step back so they can push them out of the car. That was as close as Harry would come to mentioning Jill. He knew Don didnt care what happened to Jill and wouldnt risk his own life for hers. At the stroke of ten the bank door popped open when the electronic lock released, and Don and Harry walked in. The detectives waited nervously in the cars for them to come out. Fifteen minutes later, Denby walked out with the bulging running bag the detectives had planted there the previous night. He and Don made a big show of shaking hands and turning to leave. Suddenly, a large black limousine with tinted windows materialized out of traffic and stopped right in front of them. Out popped Hector, Denbys erstwhile orderly, and grabbed Denby and Don by the arms. From their positions, the detectives could see a heated discussion, Hectors head motioning toward the running bag. Denby arguing, Don acting innocent. Hector grabbed the bag and opened it. A creepy smile filled his face, and he closed the bag, then passed it inside the limo. Denby looked shocked and miserable, looked at Don as if Don has just betrayed him. Out popped Jill and Kyle, squinting against the brilliant morning sun as if they had been kept in a cave for days. Jill wrapped her arms around Kyle, and walked with him around the corner of the bank. Diane gasped in relief, and all the detectives smiled. Don and Denby started backing away from the limo. Suddenly, a very large man in a black raincoat, wearing black gloves, shades and a Fedora, stepped out of the limo. Both Don and Denby froze. The detectives could see the barrel of a gun pointing at Denby, and they all jumped out of their vans and SUVs to stop the action before the gun was fired. The next move happened so fast, it seemed like they were seeing it in slow motion, and the detectives were glued to their spots. Hector and the man in black grabbed Don and Denby and roughly shoved them headfirst into the limo, piled in and closed the door behind them. In an instant, the limo vaporized into traffic and was gone. The detectives ran back to their vehicles and attempted pursuit, but the traffic seemed to stop on cue, blocking their progress, and the limo disappeared. I KNEW IT! Andy screamed.
