23 Dannys fingers sneaked into his pocket, searching for something. Frustrated, he exhaled, then looked around the table. He spied what he needed on Harrys copy of the release order. He reached over, slipped the papers out of the clip, and stuffed the clip into the left breast pocket of his shirt. Satisfied, he was finally able to concentrate on what Harry was saying. Harry looked confused, and he looked over at Diane for an explanation. Diane had a sympathetic look on her face. Harry figured it was an old story. Bob kept his eyes on Diane the entire time. Bob stood up, and pulled on Harrys arm so he would do the same. Were off to the ladies room, Bob said, with yet another wink in Dianes direction. I guess thats my cue its time to powder my nose, said Harry, smiling wryly. Not this time, Denby, said Diane, not at all amused. Diane, Im deeply hurt, said Harry, with a frown. Yeah, Ill bet. Danny waited till they were out of earshot, then leaned over to Diane, Im getting a really weird feeling about this Bob. How long have you known him? Since the morning after Denbys arrest. Why? I dont know. Theres just somethingoffabout the guy. That wouldnt be you acting jealous, now, would it, Danny? I mean, since weve been pretty tight lately, you and me. Danny looked away for a moment, then right at Diane. I cant say that is completely out of the picture, Diane Diane squirmed in her chair and looked a little uncomfortable. Danny but it mostly has to do with how the guy acts. Not at all like any other lawyers Ive met. And Ive met a few. I mean, doesnt the guy have anything better to do than hang out with a bunch of cops? Is it entirely impossible to believe that someone like him might show some genuine interest in me? Diane was moving toward indignant. Well, maybe there is the over-protective thing, too. Us working together and all. That seemed to deflate her growing anger, and she held Dannys hand.
