6 Al looked like he was listening to something else, and he nodded. "Play along," he whispered. "Pretend you're gonna shoot that cop, then ask for Diane Russell. She's a detective at the fifteenth squad. She's already here, but ask for her anyway." The square of light from the imaging chamber flashed up behind him and he disappeared. Sam set his jaw, determined to ignore the buzz in his head long enough to get himself out of this one.
A soft chime, then a disembodied female voice. "Admiral Calavicci would like to speak to our guest, Dr. Alessi." Donna lifted her head from her notes and met Harry's eyes for a second. "Now?" "He was quite adamant." She sighed, dropping her tablet onto the table beside her. "Fine." The pause wasn't even enough time to blink. Al nearly busted the door down and marched up to Harry straightaway. "What the hell is wrong with you?" he demanded. Harry swayed back on the bed as if he were pushed, then met Al's eyes. "Would you like the list alphabetically or in order of immediate impact?" "How about whatever doesn't make me punch you in the face, smartass," Al snarled. "Dr. Beckett is in your crazy head right now and I'd like to know at least what he's supposed to be doing." Harry opened his mouth again, but was interrupted by another set of chimes and the female voice again. "Detective Denby is currently allowing his death wish to interfere with his duty." Al snapped his head up and addressed the white ceiling. "What's that supposed to mean?" The voice continued. "Detective Denby had been charged with the safety of a Drug Enforcement Agency operative. The operative is quite safe, however..." "However what?" "Detective Denby is dead." Al glanced over at Harry. He was smiling. "Okay," Al blew out a small breath. "How does he die?" "Detective Denby was shot three times in the chest by a fellow New York City detective." The catch in Harry's throat was unmistakable. "Which one?"
