49 Guess again. Well, so thats it. No more questions? No insults? Nothing, Harry said coldly, but the hardness had left his eyes. Well, Im sorry. For everything, Diane sighed. Im disappointed. I expected more from you. After all that loyalty to Bobby, I misjudged you. You just hopped right into bed with Danny at the first opportunity. I expected more from you, too. The last thing I expected is that you would let us just peter out like this, without a second thought or even checking out the story. I thought you were a detective. Or at least, you used to be. I thought you might even give me the benefit of the doubt after what weve been through. That should be my line, Harry growled. Well, you left me alone without a word, Diane said. She got up to leave. Give Sorenson my best, Harry tossed over his shoulder. And what would that be? A knife in the chest? Diane said, shaking her head in disbelief as she walked out of the diner, buttoning her coat to ward off the cold. She looked from side to side, and then finally decided to catch a cab on the major street a few blocks over to the right. Margaret watched Diane leave, then walked over to refill Harrys mug. Oh, Im sorry about that Harry. Shes a real pretty one. A lot nicer than that skanky blonde you had in here fighting with you last week. Thank you, Maggie, Harry said as she poured, ignoring her inane chatter. If you ask me, a good-looking man like you shouldnt have no problem at all getting a nice girl like this one, she continued, oblivious to his dark glare. I dont see why you two cant just work out your problems. Heck, my husband and I argue a bit, but we always seem to be able to iron out our differences. Harry watched her walk through the diner, pouring refills as went, blathering on as if Harry were following right behind her, hanging on her every word. He shook his head, tossed down a few bucks, and left the diner, pulling his collar up around his ears. Margaret didnt notice that he turned right instead of heading left, as he usually did at this hour.
