Im glad I learned about you this early. If I had fallen in love with you, I would be devastated right now. I guess I should have known. You fell into bed with me pretty easily, after all. One boat ride in California, a nice dinner at my cousins house, and you practically ripped my clothes off. If Id known you were such a whore, I would have made my price higher when you came looking for information in the beginning.

You prick!

And now shes reduced to bitter name-calling. Weve at last reached the limit of her intelligence. Diane, Im tired of explaining everything to you, Harry said.

The line clicked and went dead.

Claire was right. Harry made a scene.

Diane held the phone for several minutes, unable to breathe, unable to figure out what the hell just happened. When the phone company lady started babbling about hanging up and trying her call again, Diane decided that was not a good idea at all. So she dropped the phone on the couch and lived through the blaring beeps and admonishments from the rude lady. She was in no mood to handle a contrite Harry if he got the urge to call her again. She was not accepting any apologies for the rest of the weekend.

Happy New Year!

Horns were blaring, party poppers tossing bits of rolled up paper and confetti all over the room. Martinellis and champagne were swigged, people were laughing and cheering. Danny was so loaded he looked sleepy. He came up to Diane and put his arms around her. Diane forced a smile and said, Happy New Year, Danny.

Same to you, Diane, he slurred, and then laid a sloppy, wet, kiss on her. She could taste the wine in his mouth as he slipped her his tongue.
