| When I was six years old, I began on my life long journey of learning to play the piano. At the beginning of my lessons, I was very upset and depressed. As a result of my anger, I kept a little journal and in one journal entry I wrote, "I started my piano lesson today and my momma wants to learn but I tried to warn her but she wouldn't listen to me". Little did I realize that that phrase was going to help me make a major decision in my life. Now that almost twelve years have gone by, I have remained in music. I have added on three more instruments, the saxophone, violin, and the bells. I see now what important part music has made in my life. I owe all of my music abilities to my piano teacher, Mrs. Mitchell. She has not only taught me lessons in learning to play the piano, but she has also taught me important lessons in life. In November of 2002, I went to the National American Coed pageant that was held in Orlando, Florida. Before I went, I felt ashamed because I was a small town pianist. I knew that people from Mississippi did not get that much exposure. As I saw the other girls, I knew that I wasn't going to make it at all. After I played my piece on the piano in front of the judges, I knew in my heart that I was just as good as the other girls from the big cities. When the announcer came up on stage to tell who won, I was in the top five out of fifty girls that were in the competition. I knew that believing in God and believing in myself is what got me there!! To inspire other aspiring musicians, or anyone, I want to tell them to keep practicing and never give up on your dreams. Always believe in God and yourself and all of your dreams and aspirations will come true!! |
