3. Need Of Water

3.(i) Domestic Use

In India, the current rate of water consumption is 90 litres per person per day in rural areas, and 270 litres in urban areas.

3.(ii)Agricultural Use

Total quantity of water used for irrigation is rather large. It is estimated that nearly 3500 litres of water per person per day is used just for irrigation. This quantity is several times higher than the average domestic demand.

3.(iii)Industrial Use

Industry uses more water than any commodity. One ton of steel making consumes about 300000 litres of water. For making average automobiles, about 450000 litres of water is needed. Most of the water used by industry is used for cooling.
