I live in Bulandshahr, a small district of Western Uttar Pradesh, 71 km far from Delhi. There has always been lack of electricity. During summers, when we were not able to fill our overhead tank through jet pump due to power cuts, we decided to use our handpump. We were already having a handpump, which we used occasionally. After great hard work when we were not able to take out water from it, we called for plumber. Plumber told us that our handpump was on 30 feet and the water table had gone down. The handpump had to be bored again to at least 60 feet down. It compelled me to find out the reason behind the drastic fall in the water table. For this reason we took up the topic, 'Water: Its Need & Management'.
