Chapter One
Flashback**
She was on the porch. It was early, about 7 in the morning, and already the sun blazed down on the small suburb. A gentle breeze toyed with her hair, which hung in a braid down her back. A small hand tugged at hers, and she clasped it firmly, knowing she would have to be strong. The little boy holding her hand was 4, with dark brown hair and chocolate eyes. He wore jean shorts and a white t-shirt.
She had on a knee-length white dress covered with red flowers. Her feet were bare.
"Wheres Daddy going, mom?" The child asked. She remembered how she'd searched her mind for an answer. She'd been so young...
"Away, honey."
And that was all she'd said, and her son hadn't said anymore either. They'd just watched him put on his sunglasses and drive away.
**End flashback**
"Gabe!" Kay called. "Gabe, hurry up. Its time to go!"
Her young son tore around from the side of the house, kicking his soccer ball as he went. She ruffled her hand through his dark curls and took one long look back at their small, blue house before she picked him up and deposited him into the passenger seat of the U-Haul van. She went around and got in herself. "Buckle up for safety. Next stop, Harmony."
The drive was long and tiring, filled with her son's happy chatter. She smiled and talked back, but secretly she worriied about going home.
"Are we gonna see Aunt Jessica?"
Jessica. The sister who thought she was evil.
"Yes, we are going to see her."
"And Charity?"
She shrugged.
"Gramma and Grampa?"
"Yes. And Simone too."
"Aunty Simone lives in Harmony, doesn't she?"
"Yes, honey. Why don't we put in your Fred Penner tape now?"
"Yeah mommy!"
As Fred Penner blared from the speakers, Kay's hands tightened around the steering wheel. 'What if everyone thinks I'm a loser? I know Theresa married Ethan Crane and Whitney is happy with Chad.....what about Miguel? Oh yeah, nothing to look forward to there. He lives in Castleton. I'm glad I won't see him. God, I'm a young single mother without anything. I hate this.'
She sighed and continued to drive.

It was dark and Gabe was sleeping when she pulled up in front of her old house. The lights were on, and sure enough, her mother and father soon were coming out the front door.
"Mom, Dad, its so good to see you again." She whispered, hugging them both. Her mother Grace beamed at her.
"And where is my grandson?" She asked, peering into the darkened window.
Kay opened the door and lifted him up. Sam took him from her and she smiled in thanks.
"You can get your stuff later- come on in. the rest of us are waiting inside."
Kay sighed and followed her family up the familiar steps. They opened the door and waited for her to enter. Not knowing what she would find or what lay ahead, she went inside.

Chapter 2
Inside, Jessica, Reese, Charity and Simone were sitting around the kitchen table. Reese pushed his glasses up onto his nose and sighed.
"I can't believe Kay has a kid. Gosh, I haven't seen her in years. Since high school ended."
"Well, looks like you'll get your chance." Jessica whispered as Kay and her family entered the room. Kay was embraced by everyone, lastly Reese.
"Hey Kay! Its great to see you! I hear you have a son." Reese smiled.
"-And the names Gabe," A little voice spoke up. They laughed, Kay uneasy. She didn't like being there...it didn't feel like home anymore.
She smiled. "Come on, honey, lets get you to bed. You can meet everyone tomorrow." She took him from her father's reluctant arms and hurriedly left the room. She shut the kitchen door and sighed, leaning briefly against the wall.
"Whats wrong, Mommy? I'm - not - sleepy..." he murmured between yawns. She laughed gently- like a mother, and carried him up to her old room to sleep.
A few minutes later she came down. It was dark except for the light creeping out from under the door. She was composing herself before going in, smoothing her hair down, when she heard Charity speak.
"Miguel doesn't know anything about Kay's child. Remember how she didn't want us to tell him when he was in college? I don't know if I could blame her; its such a shame she wasted her life like that."
Kay seethed. Charity is such a bitch.
"Charity, Darling," said her mother, "Miguel would never let her see evenn if he was. I can't possibly imagine raising a child- especially a boy, alone. With Sam here it was hard enough. I'd never regret Gabriel being in our lives, but I really hoped she'd have more fun, settle down first."
Reese cleared his throat. Oh God, she thought, taking a leap backwards. They must have seen the shadows from her feet. She finally entered, and was met with a thick, embarrassing silence.
It remained like that all evening, and Kay excused herself to bed within the hour.
"Kay," her dad said, "here. I thought you and Gabe might be interested in this."
"Thanks, dad," She replied, kissing him on the cheek. "Goodnight."
Once she was in the guest room with her bedside lamp on, she looked at the pamphlet he had given her.
People in Harmony. It was a program for children of single parents; they supplied a volunteer man for boys of single mothers and vice versa. Before disregarding the idea completely, she decided to sleep on it. She didn't have a lot of time on her hands, and it might be fun for Gabe to kick the ball around with someone....it sounded like a good idea....maybe...she just...had..to sleep...on it... Chapter Three
Kay woke up early, around 6:00. Actually it was her standard time to get up- Gabe liked to start watching cartoons as soon as possible. The morning was cool and the sky a mass of colors; it was beautiful.
She gazed at her reflection in the mirror, smoothing down her dark hair. She had dark bags under her eyes.
She dug into her large bag until she found her old robe, and shrugged it on. She went downstairs, and it was almost like walking through time. She'd gone down those stairs so many times before. She half expected to see Miguel and Charity and her mom and dad being served up eggs from Jessica. She'd always got the scrapings of the pan.
But instead she was greeted with little Gabe sittin on a chair in his Batman pj's, watching, of course, Batman. She grinned, truly glad that the time was now. Leaning against the doorway, she watched him. She was so lucky to have him. She loved him so much. So much, in fact, that she would call the agency as soon as possible.
*******************************************************************
Not a lot happened the week after Kay called the agency. They were put on a waiting list immediately. Charity was called out of town for a while because of a business trip (she was a inspirational speaker). Kay got a job in a local law firm as a secretary. And Gabe enrolled in school.
Around 5 on Friday the phone rang in Kay's office. She jumped and picked it up.
"McDermid's Office, how may I help you?"
"Hi," a man said. "I'd like to speak with a Kay Maines, please."
"Speaking." The man's voice was familiar, somehow.
"I'm your child's mentor. Sorry for any inconvenience but I'm going to be in Harmony tonight and was wondering if I could drop by to get better acquainted with you and your son."
It was just blurted out so fast, Kay spilt her coffee all over her papers. Cursingg under her breath, she began mopping up her mess.
"Is everythink alright?"
"Um, yeah. Fine. I'll see you...when?"
"Around 6:30. I have the address. Bye."
He seemed very curt. But she had no time to think about it now. She had to clean this up and get home.
