Depression is a state of mind in which there is a pervasive listlessness, lack of energy, lack of hope, lack of initiative, lack of interest in anything, a propensity to be alone, a restlessness without cause, a feeling of inferiority, emptiness, pettiness and ugliness, and a great deal of repetitive rumination about oneself and one's circumstances.
The depressed mind is offered various remedies. Medication, therapy, socializing, reading, physical exercise, meditation, ... But the depressed mind cannot see any reason to go out of depression. Life does not seem worth living. To go out of depression requires effort, and the lack of energy denies even that. Medication, being the most passive of the remedies, is the most popular. Drugs like Diazepam, Alprazolam, Lorazepam, alcohal, nicotine, caffeine all alleviate one's mood to some extent, perhaps to be followed by an even deeper depression.
In depression, one's heart feels empty, thoughts and words seem superficial, the conversations become cynical and bitter, and the world seems a gray and hopeless place. One dislikes one's own body.
Depression is a fact of life. Everybody is depressed at times. Even the spiritual seeker. He can get tired of his own meditation, his own mental patterns and his inability to break through.
To remedy depression is to push it away. To observe it is to embrace it lovingly, with unconditional acceptance.
If you be depressed or bored, stay with it and become totally familiar with it. That's the teaching of Krishnamurti.
The greatness of man lies in his self-awareness. Emptiness is a fact of ordinary life, a symptom of one's unsatiable hunger. Only through awareness is darkness dispelled. The mind can never be fulfilled. Only when the mind is not, there is silence, fullness and joy.
