The Dunbar Apartments

Named after the African American poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar, the Dunbar Apartments were the first non-profit cooperative apartment complex built especially for African Americans.  It was constructed in 1927 between 149th Street and 150th Street and Seventh and Eighth Street.  The comples had 500 units.  Interestingly, W.E.B. DuBois and Countee Cullen both resided in the Dunbar Apartments.
