| First opened in 1923 on the corner of 142nd and Lenox, it seated 700 and catered wealthy whites. Duke Ellington's Orchestra was the house band from 1927 to 1930. The Cotton Club closed in 1940 due to money problems. It later reopened, but not in Harlem. |
