Editorial Dear friend ,It gives me pleasure to present Tarusamvad again in your hands and on the web. The World Summit on Sustainable Development at Johnsberg was an event of equal importance as the Rio Summit. It has become clear from the Summit that the govts. have failed to act coherently and assertively and that we cannot look to govt. for leadership in matters of sustainability. Some govts. see commitments to expanding the use of renewable energy, providing moee basic heman rights, etc. The lesson which we got from it is 'Leader ship will come from civil society. The statements in the Summit are good in intention but they may be weak in terms of accountability or implementation. It is amply clear that the empowerment of people and organizations working towards environmental and social goodwill is necessary for sustained development of a pollution free and safe world. The civil society can not shun its role and sit-back for the govt. to act. The civil society has to push things and force the govt. to do its part. Meanwhile the every individual of this society has to work for a better environment and society. Let us resolve to make our Earth pollution free and a better place to live. Yours truly,
