Insect collection

You will collect 25 insects for your collection.  All insects must be pinned and placed in a collection box.  A shoe box with styrofoam in the bottom, is a good and cheap collection box.  You will receive 5 points for every insect collected, identified correctly, and a written natural history written about each insect.  This makes the total project worth 125 points.  This project will be due Friday September 28, at the end of the class period.

You will have both indoor and outdoor class time to work on this project, but your own time will have to be spent on this project in order to complete it by September 28.  A natural history will be written on each insect collected and identified.  The natural history must contain the following information

          Common name:

          Scientific name:

          Habitat:

          Lifecycle:

          Food:

          Location collected:

          Other info:

Write the natural history on a note card and number the note card so that it corresponds to the number in your collection.

It is possible to do a digital collection if you are so inclined, and extra credit may be given if the project is done well, due to the complexity of taking pictures and printing pictures. The natural history requirements would be the same for each picture of a digital collection.

I will begin to show you about equipment available to you in class, including insect pins, insect nets, and kill jars.  Good luck and have fun enjoying the world of entomology
