Interest Groups

Name _Brent Hardy_______________________    Internet Assignment: Interest Groups

1. What do each of these groups have in common, how are they structured and what are their main topics. How effective are they in influencing U.S. policy?

NAACP: www.naacp.org

NOW: www.now.org

Christian Coalition: www.cc.org

Anti-Defamation League: www.adl.org/

These groups all have in common that they each have a particular agenda and will push for it above anything else.  These, in particular, are very effective in influencing American policy.  They have each worked for years to lobby their agendas, and have each become quite adept at gaining the ears of important people in Washington.

2. What can you learn from these groups? Have these sites helpled you develop you own opinions on issues? Why/Why not?

These groups can show us what some people think is a major problem in America.  Each group sees a particular deficiency in U.S. government, and works to rectify it.  No, they haven’t helped me develop any opinions, because I have looked at all of these before and already made up my mind on what they have to say.

3.Examine the Better Business Bureaus’ Philanthropic Advisory site. Choose two charities that you are familiar with. What is their stated purpose, the BBB evaluation conclusion, and what programs do they provide. As to their use of funds, what percentage goes to their programs and what to their administrative needs? What does this tell you about charities? How effective was this site and is it providing a necessary function?
