Hardway Volleyball
Report
Wednesday, June 8th
The Hardway crew stepped into the sand on a windy evening with a clean slate. A new season was set to begin. Just like many previous seasons, the first task at hand is to break in the new female member of the team. This time around Kim Johnson, brother of Steven was tapped for the assignment of the setter. Trent Davis was called up from the minors to play for the vacationing Simpson. Things started out slowly for the five, dropping the first game to the bumping uglies while working out kinks and getting used to the new lineup. Hardway came around to win the next two games and seemed to be back in the groove.
Fresh off
taking 2 of 3 in the first match, Hardway turned it’s
attention to their old nemesis, the Big Dogs. The first game of the set was
played about as poorly as could be imagined and Hardway fell by 10 points. “We
seemed intimidated.” Steven Johnson remarked in a post game interview that
never happened. Then Hardway turned it on, dominating the next two games from
the service line. Steven Johnson and Justin Park both put together stretches of
7 or more points in a row, many on aces. Any doubt about the outcome of the
third and deciding game was quickly erased by Tim Brandt’s Schilling-like
performance, quickly putting the match out reach. Hardway hits the showers with a 4 and 2 game records, winning the second and third
games in both matches.
