Dear Member,

Well #5 was producing water that had elevated concentrations of one or more radionuclide constituents. On April 4, 2005 HWSC closed the valve that was supplying water to the distribution lines in our community.

The Board of Directors had two choices…#1 scrapping the well, which was just drilled in 1998, or #2 Try to recondition the well.  After long review the Board of Directors of Hardin Water Supply hired a professional ground water and environmental engineering service to assist the reconditioning of Well #5.

Looking at the gamma ray logs when the well was originally drilled the elevated natural radioactivity shown in the sediments that is present at a depth of about 720 to 725 feet or about 10 to 15 feet below the bottom of the bottom screen section.  When the well was pumping, it was likely that there was some water that moved up from the sediments below the bottom screen and into the well.  The electric log showed that there was about 20 to 25 feet of clay from approximately 600 to 660 feet that should serve as an impediment to the upward movement of water from the depth interval that had elevated natural radioactivity from about 720 to 725 feet.  The purpose of the well rehabilitation work is to plug off the bottom screen section to try to reduce the elevated radionuclides concentrations of the water well.

With the help of the Engineering Team, Weisinger Water Well Service and Bowen Cain, President we now have a well that has been reconditioned and is producing water with levels that are far below the MCL.

The Maximum Level for Gross Alpha is 15 which is measured in pCi/L (picocuries per liter (a measure of radioactivity)).  On August 8, 2005 a sample of the water from the reconditioned Well #5 was taken to the Texas Department of State Health Services Laboratory for testing.  On September 27, 2006 Hardin Water Supply received notice of the results of the sample. The results of the sample from the reconditioned Well #5 is 6.5,  please note that the MCL is 15.

HWSC is proud to announce that we succeeded in rehabilitating Well #5.  TCEQ has put us on a quarterly sample schedule to observe levels closely until further notice.
