day.
Paradise is at 5,400 feet elevation.
Height of the volcano is 14,410 feet. |
Photo tour of Mount Rainier:
Photos were taken in July and August after the snow has melted,
and the wildflowers are in full bloom.
The mountain is constantly changing throughout the seasons.
It's a challenge to capture its spirit.
This is not really a report of one trip, since we visit the mountain often.
You can navigate these pages with the map or links in the text.

Most people visiting the mountain get their first glimpse
from a distance, and are impressed by its sheer size.

View from Eatonville. |
At Nisqually Entrance, old growth forest surrounds you.
Driving the windy road up towards Paradise Visitor's Center,
you leave behind the dense forest canopy for the subalpine
meadows, famous for its wildflowers.
There are 4 main drive-in campgrounds:
Sunshine Point, Cougar Rock, Ohanapecosh, White River,
and many more campgrounds for backpackers.
Summer weekends, the park is often busy with travelers
from all over the world, but don't let this dissuade you from
visiting as well. It is, however, a good idea to reserve a campsite.

Driving past Paradise, you will pass Reflection Lakes
on the left.
This is a good spot to pull over, and walk down to the water
on the trail to see a perfect reflection of Mt. Rainier on the lake.

If you continue east on the road along Stevens
Canyon,
take time to pull over and appreciate the views.
Next the climb up to Sunrise on the east side of Mount Rainier.
Sunrise is the closest point to the glaciers one can drive to.
