| Renaissance is a term of French Origin that means �Rebirth.� The European Renaissance began in Italy during the 14th through 16th centuries. The major economic and intellectual changes that occurred following the Medieval or Middle Ages were reflected during this time period. A similar movement occurred between 1900�s and 1930�s in America, which was commonly known as the Harlem Renaissance. During this period an unprecedented amount of Black artists emerged and were known worldwide in prominent genres of poetry, fiction, drama, activism, music, art and essay. This site will help students understand a pivotal time for African Americans. It will also expose them to a fascinating and exciting time in American history. It is our hope that students will gain esteem and respect for the African American experience. |
