Happy Squares of Athens - ClubHistory

Back in the early 1950’s a group of Athenians calling themselves HAPPY SQUARES would join together for evenings of waltzing and old-time mountain square dancing. The club caller was Mr. Martin Luther “Rip” Van Winkle.

By 1958 the club membership had dwindled and Mr. Van Winkle was unable to continue as caller. Three couples were interested in learning Western Style Square Dancing. Mr. Van Winkle suggested that they consult Larry Clack of Eatonton. Mr. Clack started a new class in Jefferson. The three couples joined the class. This was the beginning of the Happy Squares, as it is known today.

Over the years, the club membership has varied greatly and once numbered more than 200. At that time graduation was held in Woodruff Hall, a large gymnasium formally located at the site of the UGA Journalism Building. Larry Clack continued as caller through 1967. Jamie Newton, Howard Bennett and Delma Allison served as guest callers in 1968, and Walt Chisholm called during 1969. Bernie Whitaker called for the HAPPY SQUARES from January 1970 until August 1975. Delma Allison became the club caller in September 1975.
