Just like all people look different, hamsters do too. There are many different types of hamsters. The most common is the golden (syrian) hamster. They are the larger type of hamster, and make excellent pets. There are other types of syrian hamsters, such as the black bear, cream colored, angora, albino, etc, which all make good pets as well. One very important rule in keeping a syrian hamster is that you may not keep two syrian hamsters together in one cage. If you do, they will fight to the death. The other type of hamster is the dwarf hamster. These consist of russian dwarves, cinnamon dwarves, chinese dwarves, siberian white winters, and Roborovsky dwarves. Dwarf hamsters are much smaller than the syrian hamsters. They aren't as friendly eaither. However, you can keep more than one in one cage. The chinese dwarves and Roborovsky dwarves are the smallest hamster breeds. If you purchase any of these two types, make sure they can't escape. There are also breeding malfunctions with hamsters when the baby hamster turns out eyeless. The scientific name for them is the Anopthalmic White hamster. It's coat is totally white, and it looks like it's eyes are closed. |
