Synopsis
The "Happy Berry" is a
group of happy - go - lucky youngsters, four girls and
a boy. They work as teen fashion designers for a living
and they do live their lives to the fullest.
Thunska, a young director of underground films, captures
their daily life to the innermost and brings out the bittersweet
revelation that may shock some “decent” audience. One
cannot say they are an example of a typical modern-minded
youngsters of Bangkok but they are real. What is most prominent
about the film is that the camera actually gets involved
with the characters, exchanging quips and so on, the technique
Thunska used in his former outing, The"Voodoo
Girls".This enables the audience to touch the
touching parts of their lives.
“Happy Berry” offers no moral but makes the
audience start questioning on the term of morals.Do they
have the right to live their lives the way they do? When
Nicky, one of the girls’ boyfriend, publishes his
private nude photo album and donates part of the income
for charity,do we really call the charity? And does Thunska
have the right to make the audience face this reality?

Criticism
"Documentary
should be more powerful than merely telling reality"
If this is to be the definition of good documentaries,
Thunska's "Happy Berry" is one of those.Beyond
his potencial for selecting clips and editting them into
his film that is able to fascinate the audience into discovering
and following "the reality", both this and his
previous work, "Voodoo
Girls" are also outstanding at expressing the
emotion and hidden points that would last long in audiences'
feelings.....This is what many other feature films can't
even succeed.

The highlight of this film is not the indecentcy(which
comes in a form of words and conversation), but the reflection
of the way of living from this generation, which is clear
,straight forward and powerful. The one and only concern
for this film is its content that might go beyond the
moral border of Thai society. This could lessen the audiences'
opportunities to see this Thai film in
Thailand!!

I truly admire Thunska's dedication(and obsession) to
films. He is the youngest of the filmmaker in Thailand,a
new comer full of energy. His works mostry represent only
one or two characters. But their action and conversations
always reflect the wider state of Thai society. Stylistically,
his films are "real time" influence by Taiwanese
cinemas. When we view his "outsiders", we always
aware of their passing time against the "normal"
time.
