Cancun
January 15-22, 2005
Rhonda and I left the Portland Airport on what we later discovered to be the last plane out for a couple of days due to freezing rain. We had a short layover in Houston, then on to sunny Cancun. As soon as we came through the gate at the airport in Cancun, we immediately got in line to clear customs and immigration. The process ended up taking about 3 hours before we finally arrived at the hotel. We were tired and irritated from the last leg of the journey, but greeted at the desk with margaritas and wonderful hospitality. Once in our room, we quickly changed and headed across the street to the Blue Cactus cantina. We were so warmly greeted by the staff there and the great prices that this soon became our second home.
The first day we spent unpacking and recuperating from the all-day journey to get to Cancun. Then we caught the city bus to
Wal-Mart to load up on supplies. That night some of the guys from the Blue Cactus agreed to take us to one of the hotspots where the locals hang out...Los Arcos. A great live band and cheap beers!

On Tuesday, we rise early to take an all-day tour to
Chichen Itza, just one of the many Mayan ruins in the
area. We saw some incredible architecture and learned how very accurate the Mayan calendar is and how everything relates back to the 365 days/12 months/4 seasons
of the year.
