S P E C U L U M M O R T I S R E G R E T Version 1.06 Copyright © 2007–2008 Happo INTRODUCTION Speculum Mortis is a horror-styled point-and-click adventure. Except a few hues of gold and red, all the environments in Speculum Mortis are presented in greyscale to illustrate the darkness and the predominant psychological horror atmosphere. Gameplay itself consists of wandering around a Victorian age residence which was abandoned years ago – or so it seems at first glance. REGRET Speculum Mortis: Regret is an update major enough to have a name of its own. "Regret" was chosen as the title suffix because it is an important theme in the game's story, and also because it represents what we felt after releasing Speculum Mortis half-completed. In truth, the original game lacked many of the aspects we'd planned for this game and left out due to time constraints. After nine months we returned to work on Speculum Mortis for a period of week, and Regret is the outcome of the time spent. Speculum Mortis: Regret fixes a great number of issues that players (and even we) found annoying, and also adds an arsenal of extra stuff into the game. Regret is not a wannabe expansion pack, nor a desperate attempt to give the game a new wave of popularity. Instead, Speculum Mortis: Regret is what the original Speculum Mortis should've been, and a little more. HOW TO PLAY Speculum Mortis is a game operated completely by mouse. * Exploration of environment is done with the left mouse button; simply click somewhere and a description is brought in front of your eyes. * Interaction with the environment is done with the right mouse button; click a door and you will enter a room, click a candle and it is added to your inventory. * Inventory itself is hidden at the bottom of the screen and shown when the cursor enters the area. Items in inventory behave in the same mouse button manner as other objects; left-click to examine, right-click to use. * Right-click the paper "X" in your inventory twice to exit. * Left-click the paper "S" in your inventory to read the description about the room. * Right-click the paper "S" in your inventory twice to save. * After getting the mansion map, paper "S" turns into "M". The map can be viewed by hovering the mouse on the paper. Speculum Mortis has only one save slot which can be found in the game directory with the name "save.sms". In case you don't want to overwrite your previous game, you can copy this file to some other place. Save game deletion is done by deleting the file. Speculum Mortis: Regret is NOT compatible with older save games!
