![]() One of the children of Shu and Tefnut, Nut is the goddess of the heavens and mother of Osiris, Isis, Set, Nephthys, and some accounts say Horus the Elder. Nut is often represented as a nude woman straddling the heavens, sometimes covered in stars. She was once united with the earth god, Geb; angered by their union, their father, Shu, separated the two. Increasingly agitated by the forbidden marriage of Geb and Nut, Ra ordered that Nut not give birth to any child on any day of the year. Thoth took pity on her plight and added five extra days to the calendar, thus allowing her to give birth to Osiris, Set, Isis, Nephthys, and Horus. In the picture above, Nut is shown being held up by Shu, her father and god of the atmosphere. Geb is stretched out on the earth below Shu.
