Niihau, the Forbidden Island
On September 28, 2003 a group of Maui divers was fortunate enough to dive Niihau, otherwise known as the Forbidden Island. Our goal for the trip was to see new and different grounds; if we caught a few nice fish, that would be icing on the cake as far as we were concerned! From left to right: John Hew, Marc Brogoitti, David McIntire, Sierra Mahin, myself, and Wes Mundy. Somehow we managed to cram six divers and all of our gear into a single minivan. After a brief ride to our condo and dinner, we spent the evening putting spearguns together, rigging shafts, and talking story. This was the first time that many of us had been on a group spearfishing trip, and the camaraderie was enjoyed by all.
The conditions could not have been nicer. We made four dives over the course of the day, and the crew of the Anela Kai took good care of us. John Hew got the the most prized fish: a fat yellow spot ulua that left the fillet knife glistening with oil after every cut. He passed up a 40 pound ulua for this fish. Smart move if you love raw fish! After not diving for over three years, Marc Brogoitti got the biggest fish of the trip. As it turns out, it was also the biggest fish that he's ever speared.
The water was so calm and warm, that Sierra abandoned her wetsuit for her bikini. Nice shot! All in all, it was a great trip even though we did get into some pretty major shark hassles. Home
