The old working horse

Once, a long time ago in Europe, there was a working horse, named Klaver. Working horses are generally much plumper and stronger than other horses and were used in Europe to pull the plow or other other tools to work on the land. This was before there were tractors.

Klaver was quite an old working horse when the old farmer died. The son of the farmer became the boss and had now to do all the work in the fields. He was a bit lazy and wanted to finish work as soon as possible so he could relax and take it easy. The old working horse was working much to slow to his liking and to make it work harder he was beating the horse. Every day the working horse was beaten to work harder. Up to one day, Klaver decided that every time he was beaten he would work a bit slower. The beating became worse but every time he was beaten he worked slower. Klaver thought he had the most ungrateful boss and the young farmer thought he had a very bad horse.

One day, Klaver could not take the beating anymore and he decided to lay down in the field. The farmer was shoked and thought the horse was dying. Quickly he realised how difficult his life would be without the horse and he took some water for the horse. After that he hugged the horse and said please do not die.

Klaver heard these words and stood up. The young farmer decided never to beat Klaver again. Instead he took good care, gave him regularly water and let him rest once in a while. Klaver liked this so much that he worked as hard as he could. Not much longer the farmer was thanking God to have such a good horse and Klaver was thinking he had the nicest boss possible
