Hanson Gets Silly
5/1/00 (Tiger Beat Magazine)

The Hanson brothers are extremely focused on their music. They take their careers seriously, which explains the unbelievable success they've had with their debut album
Middle of Nowhere and their fabulous follow-up, This Time Around. But even a pop group as driven as Hanson need to take some time off to unwind and get silly. We took a break from chatting about the album to discuss how Ike, Taylor and Zac play when work is done for the day.

Normal Stuff

So what do worldwide rock stars do in their spare time? "You know just normal stuff" says Ike, "Go to movies and just have a good time." Sounds like Ike could be the guy next door! Can you imagine going to the movies with the one and only Ike Hanson? Talk about a fun indoor sport!

But what about taking advantage of the great outdoors?

When it's a nice day outside and the brothers Hanson have recorded the last hit track of the day, what could we find them doing? "We ride motorcycles and surf," says Taylor. "And rock climb and play soccer." Surfing? There's not a lot of surfing in Oklahoma! "There's this wave pool in Tulsa," Ike says, playing the role of the wise guy. (Hey, isn't that usually Zac's job?) "We surf when we're in California," Taylor explains. "We still live in Oklahoma. It was just when we were in LA working on the record, we were out there for six months, so we took up surfing. It's a lot of fun."

All Around The World

Leave it to the Hansons to find a way to have fun wherever they are! But now that the recording of the new album is complete, the guys are looking forward to touring, and having a blast in lots of different places around the globe. "I'm particularly looking forward to going back to Red Rocks," says Ike. On the guys' last tour of America, they played a memorable open-air arena in Arizona. They also had an awesome time riding mountain bikes there with their younger brothers and sisters.

The entire Hanson family--- the boys in the band as well as dad Walker, mom Diane, siblings Jessica, Avery, Mackenzie and Zoe---always travel together. So, no matter where they are in the world there is always plenty of company and someone to hang out with. For the Hansons, it's the only way to travel.

"I'm more looking forward to places that we haven't been," says Zac, "Australia, South America, all the places that we really didn't get to go to." Taylor agrees. "We didn't really spend a lot of time in South America and there's a huge following there."

Taylor's also excited about spending more time "down under," "As far as Sydney, Australia, we played a concert there last year. That's an amazing city," he says. The Hansons packed their weeklong Australia itinerary with lots of family fun. They enjoyed a picnic on Palm Beach (just north of Sydney), a harbor cruise, a tour of the Melbourne zoo, and even celebrated Jessica's birthday at Sydney Planet Hollywood. Now that the guys are surfers, they're anxious to get back to test out Australia's famous waves.

The Family Way

So Ike, Taylor and Zac write music together, they record together, they tour together, they live together and they play together? That's right! These three siblings get along great! But they just love to joke about what life would be like if that weren't the case. "We hate each other," Taylor kids.

"We have restrictions," says Zac. "He has to stay at least two feet away."

"We run into problems during photo shoots with the whole stalker restriction, you know," says Ike, playing up the joke.

"Ike's a stalker," Taylor continues. "He's a psycho fan that we picked up along the way. That's the real Ike." Wow! Did you have any idea the Hanson brothers were this funny? "Yes," Taylor confirms. "We are extremely sarcastic." But it's the guys' sense of humor that gets them through all the complexities of being stars and makes it easy for them to have fun wherever they are. Especially since there will always be certain things the guys always be certain things the guys just can't do because they are so recognizable. So is that the downfall to being famous?

"Well there's a positive and a negative," admits Taylor
"The positive and the negative are basically the same," adds Zac. "The fact that people know who you are and the fact that people know who you are."

"Exactly," Taylor confirms. "Like if you can't go somewhere sometimes."

"People waiting outside your front door all the time," says Ike.

"That would be the real big negative, is not being able to just go somewhere and do what you do at a certain point," says Taylor.

But does that stop the guys from living normal lives and having a good time? No way! "We also at the same time just don't care. We just go out and do it," says Ike

"The good thing is we have sixth sense, so we can tell when people are behind us," says Zac, reclaiming his role as the jokester. "Duck, wait, someone's coming. Neep!"

No matter how hard Ike, Taylor and Zac work to make their music fantastic, one thing's for sure---they'll always be experts in fun!
