Hanson Promises New Album Soon

Hanson fans won't have to wait long for new material from the family trio.

According to Taylor and Isaac Hanson, the pop/rock group will release a new album in the new year, a hefty promise considering it was three long years between the release of the smash-hit "
Middle Of Nowhere" and their current album "This Time Around".

"I would count on the next record probably coming out in the coming year - 2001. That's tentative, but I'm hoping that the next music can push the envelope a little bit as far as time," says Taylor, on the phone from Washington, D.C. "I want to keep the education of people on who Hanson truly is close. I want them to see the real changes as time is going by."

Older brother Isaac is confident that the next album will come out sooner rather than later.

"I don't think we'll have a problem with getting it out fast," he says. "We're always writing songs. It took so long for the most recent record to come out because we promoted ["
Middle of Nowhere"] so long that it was really hard to get a record out faster. We did literally a year and half without any real tour. So then we were like, 'Forget everything else because we're going out and we're playing because we're tired of this.' So we went out and we played and we did a very successful tour of the U.S. and then we had to take about a month of a break because we were just so fried."

In three years, fans heard the group change from angelic blond boys singing "
MMMBop" to teenagers experimenting with different instruments and sounds.

"It's going to be similar to where we are now, but it's going to turn left or right," Taylor says about Hanson's next project. "No, it's not going to be Limp Bizkit, but it's going to be just a little different. "

But different might not necessarily spell huge album sales for Hanson. Although the recent "
This Time Around" was a critical success and fared respectably in the charts, it wasn't the smash hit that was "Middle of Nowhere". It couldn't compete with pop giants such as Britney Spears and *Nsync, who hog top slots on the charts.

Isaac isn't phased by the album's record sales, though.

"Everyone would like to always sell a lot more records, but we'll be the last people to complain," he says. "It's one of those things where we're not going to stop playing and promoting and talking about the records. You would hope that all of a sudden there would be a giant spike in sales and everybody goes, "Oh the new Hanson record, it's the most exciting thing I've ever seen ... or heard'. You always hope for that in any case, whether it's doing incredibly well or not so well. It's one of those things where you are always hoping for more. But, you know, I'm not particularly dissatisfied. I think you just keep going, and there will always be another record and there will always be another tour."

Speaking of tours, Isaac, Taylor and Zac are currently on a North American tour and the sheer enjoyment the brothers get from live performances shoots through the phone line.

As Taylor explains what fans can expect during a Hanson show, he becomes more and more animated, listing all the songs he loves to perform.

"It's a total blend," Taylor says of a typical Hanson show. "We play everything off of all of our records, besides the Christmas stuff of course. Some of the independent stuff we played a long time ago we put in every once and a while, stuff from "
Middle Of Nowhere," stuff from the new record. Even new things that people haven't heard before. Then, we'll throw in a few classic rock covers just for the fun of it for us, things like "Crosstown Traffic" by Jimi Hendrix that people don't really know, but it's so much fun for us to play, or stuff like (Steppenwolf's) "Magic Carpet Ride" or (Cream's) "Sunshine of Your Love". Hopefully it makes it an interesting show. Hopefully people walk out going, 'Wow, that was a concert'."
