Game Summary (by Dan):
Oh Captain my Captains ... when we were down, it was you who pulled us from the depths of defeat, and we are most grateful. Now don't get me wrong, the team played well, but you started us off.
Daejeon, having arrived quite early for the game (earlier than I, and I was there over an hour before kickoff). They talked an inspirational game, and they took the field in that same spirited fashion. However, they were meeting an emotional Harrier team that was fresh off of two straight wins. Knowing that we needed a win to keep things interesting for us within the SSFL, we came out ready to go.
As I have seen the forum, Big Kebin was right
when he stated that the elder statesman, Phillippe had a great game. From good
runs, to mustering a few shots, to almost getting carded a few times (Phillippe,
you know better than to be on the field
), to the final taunts of, "It's over!" though a tad premature. Yes
Phillippe, you provided the spark we needed and we did need it as well. For you
see, while neither team was able to punch in a good goal in the first half, it
was Daejeon that scored first with less than 10 minutes to go. Ashamedly, it was
I who helped in the cause. For instead of a routine drop kick, I dragged my foot
on the carpet and muffed the punt thus dribbling the ball right to their
forward. I did manage to recover and make the initial stop, but on the ensuing
corner, the ball skirted all over the show and ended up in the back of the net.
1-0 to Daejeon going into the half ... assist - me.
Now, after a talking to by Evan, we came out poised and believing in ourselves. Within the first 5 minutes, and after a series of cracks at the ball, Christophe (a captain) hammered home a ball that must have hit every player in the six yard box at some juncture, 1-1, and we were just getting warmed up. After a good run by the German Stallion, Guillaume was the recipient of an extremely well placed ball by the aforementioned Georg, and Guillaume headed the ball past the keeper for a 2-1 HRH lead. Soon after, Georg again found a HRH forward to add to the lead. After some nifty work, Georg found Evan (another captain) who was left facing a wide-eyed keeper, and the end result was a 3-1 HRH lead. Firing on all cylinders, we kept the momentum and about 15 minutes later, our quarterback from the sidelines, threw a perfect strilke. Allow me to elaborate; Jason seems to be able to find the exact spot to place a ball, and on just such a throw, the other giant on the field, Sylvain, placed his head well on Jason's throw, and we were sitting pretty up 4-1.
How the tide turns in just a few short minutes.
Feeling good, we got a tad sloppy, and from a corner (or was it a throw?), Daejeon got within two goals from an unmarked header that Dean had little chance to get to. We stayed with the game plan, and the play was back and forth. Yet with less than 7 minutes remaining, Daejeon was awarded a free kick. Even though there were 5 in the wall, the very well placed ball found its way just under the right corner, and Daejeon was more than happy to be within one goal.
However, we were not to go out like that, we held our own in the final crucial minutes, Phillippe reminded us several times that the game was indeed over, and we left our home field the victors: 4-3.
*Notes: This is now three in a row. If
we can achieve a win next week, we could blow the whole SSFL wide open and give
ourselves a fighting chance. SBFC is not
to be taken lightly, and we will need our "A" game, but in those words
we see almost everywhere - Just Do It.
