The Han River Harriers comfortably defeated the Suwon Globetrotters on
Saturday netting six goals to one.
It wasn't all plain sailing for the Harriers. Early on Suwon's four man
back line held on precariously through constant wave of attacking play.
Chances were being creating from both wings up the middle and even from a
couple of long balls. Bad luck, some good defence and safe hands from the
Suwon keeper almost kept the sheet clean until the end of the first
period. The deadlock was finally broken when Evan hit the goal line cut a
ball back toward Sean in the middle but it copped a nasty deflection
mid-flight leaving the keeper no chance and Evan was just getting started.
The second period was a bit slow for the Harriers, even with a few corners
a well struck free kick from Evan and couple of goal mouth scrambles no
Harrier could find the back of the net. Hassan, Dave and Sean kept up
the attacking momentum from midfield but things began to look a bit
sloppy. Joos, Lawrence and Randal in his high school football socks from
the seventies kept things secure at the back and didn't give Loic too much
work to do in Goal. Andy was struggling a little and stepped off however
by then Trent arrived like a knight in shining armor and was ready to help
the Harriers step up a gear in the final period.
After blunt accusations of several players playing like 'Expats' things
changed for the better in the third period. Brian began causing problems
on the wing and when he picked Art out to volley in a cross from close
range the Harriers could breathe a little easier.... but what was Art
doing up ahead of the front line? Suwon began sending a few men forward at
an attempt to turn their defence into attack. They didn't win many or the
free balls though, Art, Randal and particularly Lawrence winning all the
headers. Suwon did manage a reply with their lanky number 14 picking up a
poor clearance running past a defender or two and with a lucky bounce
found himself in a position to score and not even the flying Frenchman
could stop him.
The trotters and all their fresh legs coming off the bench thought they
could smell a come back however Yoos cheekily got in the way of one
forward play blatantly dragging a trotter down and amazingly not ripping
his
shirt. It was Evan who extinguished any ideas of a comeback scoring a hat
trick within fifteen minutes. #1 Dave found Evan with a low cross in the
middle he turned putting the defender off balance and clinically finishing
the shot low and wide. #2 Brian found Evan in the middle who skill fully
controlled the bounce ball while turning and volleying wide of the keeper
from just inside the penalty area. #3 Sean flicked on a goal kick to a
loosely marked Evan he cut in the box on the left side and made no mistake
with the finish. 5-1 Harriers and it was Sean who finished the scoring
off, collecting the ball in midfield and making a quick run forward. Dave
accepted the through ball hitting the goal line and cutting it back to
Sean who kicked a well struck left foot volley past the keeper hitting the
inside netting.
After thoughts:
Throughout the game the Harriers did
well winning plenty of free balls, not giving it away so easily except in
a couple of over enthusiastic crosses, through balls or shots in attacking
play... however some of those plays
do work from time to time just ask the St Pats keeper. The third period
saw Trent, Brian, Hassan and Dave consistently working well together
getting the ball up to the front line.
On field comments should be kept positive or as constructive criticism and
some defenders are becoming too enthusiastic about coming forward.
